If your order is less than €23 (approx I think) it won't be subject to customs. If it's more than that and your package is stopped it will be subject to charges. I don't know what the rates are though.

Ordered about 40 dollars worth of stuff from makeupgeek the other day and didn't pay customs. I have ordered from loads of USA websites including benefit and abercrombie and never paid any custom charges. Not sure why.

They can't assess every package, so they just do a sampling of as many as possible.

I've bought a lot from the USA over the years and haven't yet been charged for customs.

if it's less than €22 then you dont pay VAT. if it's more than €22 then you pay VAT at 21% plus a €6 by the post office for handling. some items are not subject to VAT but you'll have to read the customs legislation. beauty products are subject though.
every package that i've ordered of perfumes have been done for VAT...its best to factor it in and if you're not charged then its a bonus. i believe they've upped their inspection rate as i went for two years not being charged but as i said, every package recently has been done for it...
