My post has had probably near 500 views now. I've jammed with drummers off this site before but my god its gone so hard lately. Is it just the time of the year to try and find a drummer? It seems very difficult. Anyone else having this problem?

Funnily enough I've always found vocalists to be the hardest to find but drummers are definitely the second hardest! I think it stems initially from the simple fact that there aren't that many drummers around due to it being a lot harder to take up the drums when younger. It's probably also quite difficult to keep it up as an adult for similar reasons - lack of space and noise mostly. Switch parents giving out to a significant other giving out and it's basically the same situation :).

Yeah, persistence is key. My last band went through a bunch of different drummers before we found one that fitted.

    story of my life :(

I'd go with the theory that the vast majority of drummers suffer some form of mental instability - maybe it's because they hit things from one end of the day to the next, that OCD thing they do of knocking out beats on their laps when removed from a kit, or the fear Spinal Tap put into them of bizarre gardening accidents, who knows. What I do know is drummers are hard to find, and good ones with no mental problems are like rocking horse ****.

Beg, borrow or steal them, they're local band Holy Grails.

when ever i had a band together was always a good reliable singer that was the hardest found and 10 yrs on im havin same trouble great drummer no singer:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 445 ✭✭viadah

Yeah, there's another thing I've noticed - some people who find stable, grounded drummers have a bitch of a time with the other members of the group. Maybe electrons spin the wrong way around drummers.

if someone from my area is a good guitar/singer id be happy to be in a 2 piece and not have ocd or any mental problems:)

hey man i know the feeling,i have my band together now,but it took me the guts of two years through boards and word of mouth.since then iv met lots of musicians around my area i never knew excisted.all ill say is put ads up all around your area anywhere people are gonna be and will see it.if u just rely on these sites u could be waiting around a while, and most people that contact u prob wont be that close to u.also be very clear on what your goal is. cheers hope this helps.

I've always thought bassists were hard to find. Can never find a reliable, committed bassist.

I'd say the problem with most drummers is lack of transport that can bring all their gear. This is especially the case in genres where the drummer uses a fairly large drum set.

Most drummers that I've met who are in bands have had their own vans.

As a drummer Id put it down to guitarists being at the total other end of the personality spectrum to drummers !

Are there that many drummers that depart from the standard bass, snare, 3 toms, hihat and couple of cymbals? I've seen someone fit all of that stuff into a Fiat Punto :).

I have no idea what any of them are :o so I Googled them. Hrm. No idea. I think the scaffolding metal type things that hold the cymbals and other parts up are what the vans are needed for, but this is mainly just in metal bands.

Heh, fair enough. I've seen those frame things and they do look damn awkward if they don't fold or retract. In my limited experience though drummers playing metal seem to just use the same kit except with a double bass drum pedal. I could definitely see a van being required if two separate bass drums were being carted around!

Id say theres a lack of drummers in general, as Ive seen in one of he posts here its hard to get started young unless you have very patient parents but again this doesnt stop people picking it up when they are older.
The transport thing doesnt help with younger drummers as you cant put your 20 inch bass drum along with your toms, snare, stands & cymbals on yer back and hop on the bus.

We also tend to bunch together away from the outside world, drummingireland.com is the first place to start though if you are looking.

With a drummer he needs drum space, tolerant neighbours, a car for transport. A guitarist needs a mere bed.

Im a professional session musician (guitar and drums).

Most drummers or guitar players i suppose will run a mile when they see the word 'startup' etc. Anyone who has been around for a while understands the amount of hard word and dediation it takes to get a startup going. Its hard to get an experienced player to put the time into this mainly because we want to get paid. Plain and simple.

There is an add on here somewhere of someone looking for a session drummer. But - they dont pay for rehearsal time. Will only pay when a paid gig comes in. This band are looking for another member. You pay a session musician for their time. Be it studio, live or rehearsal.

    Hope this helps a bit

P.S a drummer without transport may aswell be a drummer without arms

I'm a drummer for over 30 years - gig with buckets of bands here and there - from all styles. I think the problem is drummers have so much gear to setup and breakdown and ship in and out of the car.....you get to an age you just want to work with bands that are doing paid gigs to justify the hassle of it all :0) These days I avoid original bands (Unless highering me :0)) and concentrate on covers - still love the passion that never goes - but breaking gear down at 2 or 3am after a hard physical gig and loading up the car is a pain in the A£$S, so the bread helps :0)

if your ever stuck for a drummer check out www.philgaynor.com and you'll see my contact details.

Also - most muso's I know think Drummers are complete nutters and very unreliable - contrary to popular belief I don't agree - I know many many drummers and could not think of one I know that is this way. When you're at this full time - of course one's playing has to be top notch, but you live and die by your reliability and reputation - neither of which I've damaged too much in 30 years! (I think!)
