I assume you have to be a resident and have an address there first .

It's surprisingly difficult. Many UK banks will insist that you've been resident for a set period of time and/or pass a credit check (yes, even for a current account) and/or ask for a reference from another UK bank. You usually need a UK ID number (their equivalent of the PPSN) which can take a few months to obtain.

One avenue, once you have a UK address, is to speak to Bank of Ireland (UK). I know one or two people who've gotten an account with them on the basis of their Irish BOI account/bank giving them a reference.

Lot of people opening accounts in the north with Irish addresses. Its purely to move funds out of the € but nothing stopping them using the UK branch of the bank they opened an account with.

They are normally savings account so depends on the type of account you want, but some have opened both savings and current account.
