Self Assigned IP

Whenever I try to connect to the Internet on my mac it won't connect and in the network option in system preferences it says under Airport "self-assigned IP". I've tried restarting my mac and router with no luck. Ive changed my location from automatic to new location and still it won't work I've also rested my Navram and VRAM.

Im currently with eircom and the router is a Zyxel.

*Update: After a couple of restarts it's working again but I want to find out if it's going to happen in the future so I'll know how to fix it.

Is DHCP turned on in your Zyxel? Make sure it is and then as a first stab, i'd go into wireless preferences and choose 'forget network' and then set up a new connection to your wireless network.

How do I know that DHCP is turned on? I already tried forgetting the network and the internet came back but is now very slow. The other windows computer in my house works fine along with my iPod.

    System Preferences > Network > Airport > Advanced > TCP/IP > Use DHCP.

I usually see that when my f**kin UPC router is acting up. I don't think the mac is the source of the problem

Seems to work fine now but it slow at times. Probably the router is gone to shíte even though it's only a month old

not too sure how MAC's behave but it is probably trying to get the address via DHCP each time you re-connect. So if the signal is weak then it's not unexpected.

Try connecting via a network cable to see how stable the router is normally.

Home routers have an on/off switch for a reason, it's not a bad idea to turn them off for a minute once a month even if they are working fine. At work we used to use a timer plug to reset wireless gear in the middle of the night

I've connected via Ethernet and it worked fine but when I used wireless it became slow. Used Ethernet and wireless when no other computer/device was connected.

    Now what?

Have you rebooted the router? That's always my FIRST step.
