Why are "they" sticking buttons on the sleeves of shirts?

I just dug out a nice olive green shirt from my closet and realised.... it's got god damn buttons on the sleeves and they look stupid, the very reason it was in the back of my closet.

Nobody seems to avail of the shirt turning-up function they provide, so why do I see them everywhere.... why do they haunt me?
