Making friends in Dublin! How to go about it?

    Hi guys,

    Apologies if I start rambling..

I'm a 25 year old Irish guy living/working in Dublin for the last 2.5 years, and in that time I haven't made any 'real' friends.. Until recently it hasn't bothered me too much as I was working long hours (55-60 per week) and in my free time I just enjoyed the break from work. Recently, I've had more time off and found myself getting a bit p'ed off about not having anyone to go for a beer with, go to a gig etc. like I would if I was at home. I've always had a wide circle of friends but at the same time was a bit of a loner - often doing things alone when I could invite friends etc., so making friends probably doesn't come natural to me..

Main interests are music, reading (when I get a chance!) going to the pub or a gig - pretty normal mundane stuff.. I like to think I'm good company, quite smart and don't take myself too seriously.. I would preferably like to meet people with the same kind of interests..

I've never really been the sporting type - I'm a bit out of shape at the moment (working on it!) and would find it hard to commit to sporting activities or night courses because of work..

Anyway, I hope I've covered everything.. All suggestions welcome..

    Thanks a lot.

Hey do you use boards a lot? They arrange meet ups for beers all the time in different forums, I believe after hours does it a lot too? Could be a good idea to post or read the forums that interest you and next time they're going for a beer go along?

Have a look at meetup.com. Just put in your area and there's loads of stuff to do - philosophy chats, gigs ("gigonometry" is a really good group in Dublin), comedy ("comedy comedy") and lots of pub meetup groups too. I really like the "Socrates Cafe" which meets once a month in the Exchange in Temple Bar and it's full of interesting lovely people. The "Randomness Meetup Group" and "Arts and Culture" do a lot of everything including pubs, art exhibitions and even picnics on Bull Island.
