Hi, I'm pretty sure I got some dirty petrol in my car. Its stuttering and sluggish and losing power. Need some advice, what should I do??
Managed to get it into my driveway but don't want to turn it on for fear of doing damage (I'm a girl and pretty clueless about cars). Thanks in advance.

Did you fill the petrol tank up or just throw in say €20? What make is the car?

What kind of a car is it? Is there excess smoke coming out the exhaust, have you checked there's oil in it? Was there any warning lights on the dashboard? Was the car empty and you filled it or did you just add a small amount of petrol to it? How long since you bought the petrol?

MY guess is it's €20 Tesco petrol. A mechanic I know well say many people are having those exact problems filling their tanks up 1/3 or so with Tesco Petrol.

I'm probably wrong here though :P

You bought the car Sunday night or the petrol? If its the petrol, best thing to do is drive it and drive it until the pertrol has gone down and fill it back up again to the top, failing that id get a mechanic to check it out.

The "dirty petrol" wasn't diesel by any chance??

Naw, I'd say it's definitely due to a partial fill of Tesco. Maybe it was filled in Esso this time, but I bet it took €20 of Tesco at some stage. I heard it just hides in your tank, biding it's time... then, when you least expect it - WHAM!

Okay, I'm "guessing" its dirty petrol which i bought on sunday night, from a fairly dirty garage. I googled the symptoms and this seems the most likely contender...
Just wondering should I chance driving it...? any one know a good mechanic on the southside of cork city??

Julianne very interesting the very same thing happened to me, I had filled my car up with 54 eu of petrol in a cork garage, the car was chugging and losing power plumes of black thick smoke coming out the exhaust, the car has been in two different garages and out of action for 2 weeks, the mechanic checked everything from coils, spark plugs timing etc. and could not find anything wrong, eventually as a last resort, they drained the fuel tank and said the petrol was cloudy, they put in new petrol and the car running perfectly again. Cost to me was 700eu for 54 eu of dirty petrol !!!
I am very interested to know where you bought the petrol ?? I am in the procees in having the petrol analyzed. I would advise you to go to your mechanic and have the tank drained and cleaned out as it can do severe damage to your engine. I have contacted the garage but no satisfaction.
