I cant comment on whether its worth getting one or not (i havent personally owned one) but I will say, if you are going to buy one new, it might be worth your time waiting a month or two as the ipad is rumoured to come out either in September or November:

the article says the ipad will have new processers by mid-2012, it doesn't say it won't be released until then, although it's a possibility..

I dont personally own a Ipad but my dad dose and i use it fairly often. My opinion of it is that its is a super device, i dose email, the web, movies, photos, music, could be used in a business setting for presentation( you can plug in a projector into it), exceptional battery and in my experience it just works. Although I would say some down sides are no usb ports, you cant charge it off your laptop you will need to carry around another charger but like I said earlier the battery is exceptional, no flash support but that may change in the next year or so when html5 is used more and you could always get the app skyfire, but that dose not work on all websites. i see other people are saying wait for the next version but to be honest i dont see the point the processor in it is fast enough and the graphics are amazing. as a device its brilliant i even looked at getting one instead of a laptop! and in regard to size i'd go with the 32 GB, the 16 is for me is just too limiting and the 64 GB is slightly overkill when are you going to need 64 Gb worth of what ever? and i'd go with wifi only you can tether your iphone4 to it if you need internet on it. if you dont have a iphone 4 or some other phone you may want to look into the 3g version, but bear in mind to have it with 3g adds about another 100E onto the price. oh and yes i would recommend it

    Absolutely. Unputdownable!
If for some reason you don't like it (very unlikely) the resale value is exceptional, so you'd have no problem selling it. (keep the box and paraphernalia) :)

My better half went to the states about 6months ago and said she would bring me one back,I told her it would be a waist of money as I have a laptop and desktop. So glad she didn't listen it's never out of my hand email, surfing, games, tunes, vids. They don't replace any other device but yea they rock.:D

A good iPad app is a totally different user experience to an iPhone app. Apps like flipboard and sky news really show the power of it.

Amongst it's other uses, it's as good as a spare tv - with sky go, 4OD, filmon tv - rte iplayer on the way too. Also kindle app looks great on it.

It's great value for the price. Laptop is gonna become a "work" device - tablets are the future and Apple defo have it nailed at the moment - android tablets seem a couple of years behind.

I have an iPad 1 and I love it.

Considering I was one of the people who slagged off the iPad on this very forum before owning one speaks volumes. I have had android tablets too which do offer more functionality, but for build quality, and just the sheer pleasure of use the iPad comes top of my list. I love it!!

I'm considering buying an ipad myself as a replacement for my laptop which has given up the ghost. I'm thinking of doing a distance learning course and will need to be able to type assignments, attend online lectures etc. Is that kind of work viable on an iPad? Does it have word processor software like word, excel, powerpoint?

Yeah, there is a word processor app you can buy called Pages. But you would need to make sure that the online lectures work with the iPad. The iPad has no Flash and somethings don't work great with the touchscreen. Plus, education websites are often crap and don't work with many desktop browsers never mind their mobile equivalent.

Tbh though if you are going to be doing a lot of typing you would be better off with a laptop, for which the iPad is no replacement. I would tend to agree that it mostly for fun. It can't really be fully relied on yet for serious work.

You can ignore every "Hell Yeah!" and "God No!" answer until we know what it is you want to do with it.

    For example:
    Browsing internet - excellent
    Playing flash videos - rubbish
    Checking news/mail/social media - excellent
    Typing your thesis - rubbish.

I have one and its great, but only because it works for what I want it for.

I would need it for college, it has no USB so people have said. I think I'll stick to the laptop so.
