    Hi,

I'm starting in DCU in a few weeks and I'm doing CE to science. Does anyone now how much books for the course will cost me in total?

And can you buy second hand ones in the book shop?

    Thanks,
    DanDan

The chem, bio and physics books come in a pack of 3 and cost around 160 and then there's a maths book around €40 and then 3 lab manuels on top at €10 each.

The chem, bio and physics books come with one off codes that are used for "online homework" that goes towards your CA at the end of the year. However they can be bought off their publishers site for around €20 each.

The bookshop doesn't sell second hand but, you'll be seeing emails from 2nd years trying to flog their books cheap, including me ;)

hold off on buying books till the end of the first lecutres, often the books are in the library for free and in abundance, if your lecturers make it a point to 'own' a specific book then go buy it. lab manuals arnt debateable, my year got digital copies for phy but thats because it was our major (pbm, ap )

There will be a few copies of the books in the library but the only problem with depending on borrowing them from the library is that the lending periods are not that long. A long term loan is only for three weeks and even with this if someone else requests the book in the library while you have it on loan you have to bring it back within a day or two, you can't still keep it for the full three weeks.

The books are needed to help with your online assignments and just the general understanding of whats being taught in the lectures. The books are more of a study aid than an actual requirement for the modules but you will definatly need the code for the online assignments.

My advice is be careful if you are depending on borrowing the books from the library instead of having your own it may very well work out for you but it also might leave you stuck. If you havn't taken the subject for the leaving cert having your own book for that subject is probably a good idea as sometimes you just need more than your lecture notes to understand topics.

Also, If you're paying €60 for the online codes on their own there's a good chance that you will be able to get a decent set of second hand books for not much more than that and some of the books might have unused codes on them.

Maybe wait until the first week of lectures to decide whether you would prefer to borrow them from the library when you need them or to get your own set. You'll probably know by then if you'll be relying on the books to understand what's going on and by then the second years will all be sending emails selling their books!

Cool thanks, see it's been 2 years since I did any Science subject and I just did Bio at that. So I think having the books will suit me better. But I dont wanna be paying over 200 for everything so will go 2nd hand for defo. Have someone selling to me already at cheap enough price :)

Try upstairs in Chapeters on Parnell st. They sometimes have a few second hand at fairly ok prices.

There is also a savage little shop on talbot street just past the rail bridge opposite supervalu. They sell second hand computer games and books and usually have a nice little selection and will do a deal with you if you buy a few.

I picked up three last time i was there, a quantum mechanics book, Optics by Hecth and a photonics book all for around 40e.

    I would highly recommend them.

I just finished my course in analytical science and only bought 2 books in the 4 years, both of which were pretty pointless. You can easily get through your course just using the library, as well as pdf online versions of books.

My advice would be to avoid buying books, there's a chance you will barely use them or will only need it for a year depending on the topic. If you need a code for homework, as said, you can buy that separately for much cheaper. Otherwise try to get them in the library. If that fails, there are ways of getting them online, though they aren't strictly legal :p

I'm going into forth year Genetics and Cell Biology and the only book I bought was the 1st year biology book for the code (didn't realise you could buy it separately).

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test
