Tried copying onto it from my planner but nothing happens only telling me to have my VCR ready to record.
Thought i may be able to record onto the usb and connect to another box and watch the programmes from the other box.

Or does the usb have any other functions for the sky box??

    Cheers

As far as I know,,it's not used for anything at the moment..

They may have plans for it further down the line.

Although I think you can use it as a phone charger..

Open to correction on that though.

The main drawback on a Sky box is that you can't plug in an external hard drive into that USB portand copy programmes from your planner onto it, instead of fiddling about with a DVD recorder.

The recordings on your Sky+ planner are encrypted anyway, so even if you were able to copy the files on to another HDD, you could only play them back via a Sky box.

I guess USB ports aren't expensive to add and are there "just in case"

Sky Italia, for example, started using USB port on their boxes for DTT sticks.

My mate in Italy has had a usb dvb-t tuner plugged into his Sky box, with full EPG integration, for two years now. See http://www.digitaltvnews.net/content/?p=10972
