Is it better to be interviewed first or last?

    Hi there,

I know it might be a bit of a strange question but I'm just wondering is it any advantage to be interviewed early in the day or late in the day. Interviewers must get bored hearing the same unoriginal answers all day. Would someone interviewed first go to the top of their list and everyone else after that be judged against them or would someone at the end of the day that gave a good interview be more likely to be remembered. Maybe it doesn't matter at all depending on the way they mark an interview.

Reason I asked is I was just phoned to attend an interview next week for a shop managers position. I was given first slot at 11.30 as the girl that rang said I was the first person she rang. I changed this to the last slot at 3.30 so I have a better change to get the time off work to attend...did I put myself at a disadvantage?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

It doesn't really matter if you are good. If you are not memorably good then maybe first or last few are better as they would at least have a better chance of remembering you.

Came across a study while doing my Masters that went something like this

Studies on this topic have shown peoples score changed depending on what position they interviewed in a cycle of interviews ,the top scorer was always the same candidate ,So I do not believe it will have an impact on you getting the job.

Two things found -early candidates will be given more opportunity to impress the interviewer, Later candidates are judged against the previous competion and interviewers are apparently quicker to discount a candidate.

If the candidates are below the level wanted by the company ,interviewing later in the day is more successful as interviewers start judging candidates against other candidates and not the Spec.

But seeing as you cannot know which scenario you are in ,it makes little difference to which time you choose.
What you can take from this ,do not get too insulted if they give you a very short interview in the evening ,do not get too excited at a "good" interview early in the day.
