When to Change Blades? Advice Needed.

    Hi guys,

I've been using DE razors for quite a while now. Currently using Derby Extras (got a 100 pack on eBay).

Thing is though, I don't have a strict routine for changing blades, usually it's only when I think it's gone a bit blunt. I know some guys are pretty strict with changing blades, changing after a number of shaves or changing at a specific time (every Monday).

I never keep track of the number of shaves I do with a blade as I shave irregularly. In theory, I like to shave every second day, but usually it's less frequent because I'm lazy or rarely more when I'm going out a lot.

So what do you guys usually do? And how do you keep track of things?

I used to change blades whenever it felt like it was tugging more than cutting. Usually that was after about 4 to 6 shaves depending on which DE blades I was using.

My shaves with a DE are now infrequent (I've moved to straight razors) so if I do use a DE I just put in a new blade each time - there is no way I'm going to remember how many shaves I've used on a blade I haven't used in maybe 3 weeks.

My advice is to just use a new blade each time if you don't shave regularly. I mean Derby's are about €10 per 100 (without shipping) so even if you shave once every 3 days you're still getting most of the year out of the 100 blades if you only use them once. Not bad for €10.

I tend to change about every 3-4 shaves.

If I can't remember this I just swap the blade out.

Thankfully DE blades don't cost as much as carts.
