Colour. How important?

When you buy a car, how important are the colour options to you?

Me, the car I have is blue, it wasn't really a consideration when I bought it - though it may well have been had it been a white car, for example. I am currently researching for a new car and immediately rule out

white (too mod-ist looking for me)

silver (are half of all cars silver or similar?)

green (who buys a green car?)

"electric" blue (there's just something about cars that colour that scream "mid-age crisis" to me)

    gold (no comment needed)

I'm a fan of blue myself, my car is a dark metalic blue colour, although I have to say I'm a fan of electric blue too, but it depends on the car.

    Very important.

    As important as wheel selection.

I work in the motor trade industry and am constantly asking colleagues this question,

The amount of cars I have seen that are either An awful brown or gold or puke green, Its ridiculous,

Unless you are getting a significant reduction for a demo model vehicle there should be no need to walk in to the showroom and ask oh I would love to buy that new mondeo does it come in Snot green or rust brown????

I would never buy a red car

Most colours are ok for me.
Maroon is a preferred colour, hey I live in Galway :)
    Racing green is also nice.

White is a no-go for me. Get's dirty quickly and looks too tracksuity.
Red turn into pink after a few years so that's not a good option either.

I will not own / hire a red car.

My wife was told by a fortune teller once that she would kill two people driving a red car ( yes I know load of bo**ox but you can't untell her )

Also , don't the police play ' snooker ' whereby red cars are more likely to be pulled ? ( if this is true white cars are less likely to be pulled ).

I know of a dealer principal who used to offer a grand less when a white car was being traded in, purely because it was white.

    Difficult colour to sell on?

Blue cars break down less often.

But maybe the two people are in another car, red, that she hits with her white one :(

Actually, yes, red is a non-runner for me too, unless I'm buying a Ferrari.

I've a dark green car and it's a nightmare to keep clean.

I got a red car because my car only came in red.

Don't suppose I had much of a choice.
I made an active effort from when I started driving to only drive silver cars though.

    pity.

and lads, red turns to pink when people don't look after the car(as in washing and waxing regularly). Although I suppose for Irish motorists that means red turns into pink without a doubt.

I think it depends on the car. Certain Cars/Models can pull of more daring colours.

Stick to the most common, Silver/Black/Grey/Red.

    But
White = W@nker (My Brother In Law has one and is proof of this rule)

    Also

A Nissan Tida should be sent out bare metal, in the hope it will die sooner.

Some colours suit some cars, some colours suit other cars.

Colour is a very personal thing. Personally, I hate Gold/Beige on a car - it's a colour for old man's slacks, not a car - but some people love it.

There are a couple of manufacturer's offering dark brown cars now. Sounds horrible, but does look well IMHO in real life.

OP - what car are you looking at?

Black has been very popular for the past couple of years, with Silver on the wane (thankfully). Grey has also been pretty popular recently.

I hate silver, really hate it. It ruins so many nice cars. Manky, dull arse of a colour.

My 92 e36 is(was) red now its lovely pinkish in places...

Tbh couldn`t care less when bought it as there is not a single spot of rust on the body and mechanically as sound as a newly built car so colour is(was) not important at all for me.

Yeah, tell that to the previous owners. Will do some serious polishing/waxing on it soon enough though. ;)

No she was told she would be driving a red car.... so now she does not drive red cars .......

You should see the fun when we hire cars on holiday , trying to explain we don't want a red car ...........

I know it's stupid , but once she was told that ...

    red is the fastest!

Strongly considering a Merc (It's my age, Hah! :pac:), four door saloon, under 2l, C or E.

Very common (looking) in silver. Am quite taken with dark blue with cream leather.

But I really do wonder when buying new, at what point colour choice kicks in. There's a pink Imprezza I see around Tallaght sometimes, or yellow Seicento, or metallic green Kia - how were these someone's first choice when new?

The pink is definitely a respray.
As for electric green though..that's a brilliant colour!

I picked my car because of its color... (and the fact it was mechanically sound and really well looked after) But mainly the color.. Its Purple!!!:P

Well your first choice, the Merc, is suitable for the John Major Look - Grey, Grey, Grey.........failing that, blue. Black if you want to spend all day cleaning it........and still look like a Hackney.

As for the yellow - it suits' the car. I bought a new Cinquecento Sporting in yellow, many years back - it was perfect.

But I wouldn't buy an E-Class in yellow.

Do you see what I mean........ ?

some of the post 2006 honda civics have very weak paint jobs. enough to put off a buyer. they must have had great sales men working them, to convince people to buy such drab colours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭pajo1981

Depends on the car I think.

Some cars are more colour sensitive than others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,777 ✭✭✭flyingsnail

I think it really depends on the car. I have my mondeo in dark green and I like it. I don't really like cars in black, white or red.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,017 ✭✭✭Bendihorse

I love DARK metalic silver in most cars, great for showing off angles and reflecting the light. Light silver is boring.

I dont like white at all. Agree with previous posters, generally driven by ejits who just want people to look at them, flash gits.
WHEN white goes out of fashion again, they will be impossible to shift.
White cars also tends to get old looking very quickly, probably because it makes any misalignment in joinings at panels like bumpers etc very obvious.

A lot of cars are the colour they are due to manufacturers using that colour to signify a certain trim level/special edition etc.

My first car was racing green (rover), second car was red (MG ZR) and my 3rd car was metallic black.

I got so sick of looking after dark coloured cars that I then bought a silver RX8. It was a dream to keep clean and took little effort.

My current car is metallic black because I was sick of using expensive wax/polish etc. on silver and not noticing the difference :o It's also the rarest colour for this car.
Those are the reasons for my own choices!

Certain colours also accentuate the lines on a car. Red does this best I think hence why a lot of Ferraris are red.

    Not if it's JDM yo!

But on the actual topic of car colour preference, in general i don't care too much, but there are some specific cars that i only like in certain colours.
For example i only like the new BMW 5 series in dark colours and with big wheels, hate them in lighter colours but think they look pretty nice in dark blue, dark grey or black

i think most cars look horrible in silver, I will never own a silver car

most cars look well in black but aside from that id consider a dark blue , white , red or gunmetal grey , aside from those colours wouldnt be buying
