Im going into second year arts in NUIG but Im trying to decide on two subjects to continue with. Im trying to decide between spanish, soc and pol and geography and I really like all of them .Id like to do teaching or social work.Last week I went to the career centre in the college and the guy told me Id need to do two teaching subjects but if I wanted to do social work Id need to do soc and pol. He also said not many schools teach spanish and trying to find a teaching job with it would be tuff.

wasnt anne byrne saying last year that they were getting the gear together to bring soc&pol to secondary level? someting went wrong. i think they are trying to bring it in next september instead.you could go for soc&pol and geography and do either social work or teaching then :)

You could do a diploma in spanish during or after your degree and you can teach spanish up to junior cert at the very least.

To get onto the Galway social work masters you will need (at least) soc and pol. Other social work courses don't accept soc and pol in NUIG as such.

Soc and pol is a good basis for many masters including teaching.

As a student of Soc and Pol, I will let you know that unless you intend to use the subject for Social Work, Community Development, etc, it will probably be quite difficult to pursue the subject within a teaching career; mainly because it will probably take many more years for CSPE to be recognised as a Leaving Cert subject. However, with Spanish and Geography, you have a much greater chance of receiving a teaching post which will be difficult in this economy. All the best to you, and the main thing is to pick the subjects that interest you the most as they will lead you to your dream career eventually :)

May be a bit obvious, but when thinking about your choices, don't forget that, if you take Spanish, you'll be spending the third year of your degree on Erasmus, and you'll get the chance to take courses in your second subject through Spanish also.
Best of luck whatever you ultimately decide to study!
