Does anybody have any experience with the Business Economics modules 1 & 2. Are they tough ?? What exactly does the modules consist of ??

I was thinking of choosing them instead of the of the straight-up maths modules.

    Hi Michael,

I am going into my second year of Computer Science. I did the maths module so don't have any first hand experience with the economics ones.

The impression I got from the people I know who did them is that they are tricky enough but not impossible. From what I saw from the course material and exam papers, they don't do far beyond the scope of Leaving Cert economics.

Note also that the exam papers are available at the ucc library site (http://0-booleweb.ucc.ie.library.ucc.ie/exams.php).

    Thanks for the reply !!

The economics exam papers don't look too bad. I'm still undecided though - I could do with sharpening up my maths skills. I think I might regret it if I avoid the maths modules though.

Take it from me..unless you are gifted at Maths don't do MA1054 Calculus. It is very hard. Although it is doable by a good honours maths student the workload will make your computer science modules suffer.

MA1003 on the other hand (I switched after christmas) is a very nice module the standard lies somewhere between honours and pass LC maths and if you attend all the lectures (many many people made this mistake as it starts very basic) should be a cakewalk. This is the module by far most of your classmates will be doing.

I only got a B1 in ordinary level maths in my Leaving Cert - so I definitely won't be chancing my arm at the calculus module.

I am however thinking about doing the MA1003 module though. It's between that now and economics - decisions decisions !!

I've told you all I know about the economics modules but if you've any questions regarding MA1003 ask away!

    Hey Michael,

I think a few people did economics in my year (I'm a third year now), I think it was an alright module though a few found it tough but I can't comment on whether that was due to attendance or not.

I will say however, if you pick an on-campus module and it's a rainy day, it's very hard to build up motivation to leave the Western Gate building and walk/cycle to main campus for an hour lecture... It was for me anyway, but I hate mine :pac:

Hey, thanks for the reply !!

Quick question for you; are the maths modules compulsory in 2nd and 3th year. ?

I can answer that, I'm going into 3rd year too!

I did MA1003 module in first year and breezed through it, very easy if you're coming from honours maths. Didn't do either of the maths modules on offer in 2nd year, opted for CS modules purely because of the convenience of having people around if I had trouble (also the walk from the western gateway to the main campus :P ).
