Buy now or wait?

So I'm getting a new car soon but I'm split 50/50 as to get it now or wait until January.

Buying a new VW Golf Edition-R and the initial plan was to order for January with some extra options (MFSW, privacy glass, auto lights&wipers = about €500). Trading in a 2001 BMW. Best trade in I got was €3800. The car has it's NCT and tax up soon. Roughly €300 to keep it on the road until January for those.

The dealer has just offered me €4500 trade in now, for a stock model. Very tempting to take it now.

Pros: About €1500 cheaper with better trade in and no options. I can drive it now, I won't be pouring money into my old car.
Cons: Won't have the options I want (will make it that little bit different aswell). It'll be a year old in 4 months.

    Whereas waiting until January:
Pros: Will have the options I want. 2012 reg - better trade in value down the line.
Cons: €1500 ish dearer. I have to wait. And I have to pour money into keeping my old car on the road until then.

I'm leaning towards waiting until January but they are some savings to get it now. Opinions?

The Golf R is so rare it may not make a huge difference if it's a late 11 or early 12 plate when you come to trade in. Personally I wouldn't be able to hold off. Nice car.

Haha, lets not get confused - this is the Edition-R not the R line :o

It's based on the comfortline spec, with R-line styling and a touch screen radio and bluetooth as standard.

What's all the pouring money into the BMW about? Is it half wrecked or something?

Where did you get that idea? No, I'm talking about the tax and nct.

What model BMW is it? €4500 seems quite decent as a trade in

Can you not order one for now?

Fck waiting a quarter of a year, maybe more, just for the sake of it. But I'd also want the little additions. If it was me, I'd be looking for an import now and get it in +/- 2 weeks with all my bits and bobs on it, and still enjoying it for the rest of the year.

Otherwise look at taking the stock and scope how much putting privacy glass (replace or spray, whichever) is.

Id hold off until 2012. Anything you spend on the old car will be tiny in comparison to losses on a new one.

    ^^^The instant gratification generation;)!

There are probably better deals to be cut at off-peak times - all the sheep go to change in Jan.

However, buying new is bad enough depreciation-wise without changing 3-4 months before the end-of-year and not getting exactly car you want.
Unless the salesman REALLY needs to hit a sales target I'd be more inclined to wait I think.

Mind you, I bought new in early July 08 - which is later in the year than most would countenance (partly to benefit from the new tax bands).

I think you would be crazy to buy a new car in September. You will suffer 12 months depreciation in just over 4 months time. The depreciation over the next 4 months will be alot more than €300 for tax/nct and €700 trade-in difference of your old car.

    Or just plain ill-informed.....

spottyelephant, do you think VW just have cars lying around of all specifications just in case someone wants something specific? Or, is it more likely that an order has to be placed in a factory, somewhere in Europe, for the car to be built to spec? It has to gone in to the que behind all the other cars that are also being built, and then shipped across the waters to this wee Isle on the outskirts of Europe.

    Things take time.

Personally I'd hold off till Jan.

What the dealer is doing by giving you a better price now is off setting your depreciation come Jan, he's shifting old stock and improving cash flow. Sounds win win, however you don't get the car you want!!! Come Jan you'll be glad your in a '12 ;)

    Hold off untill Jan mate.

It will in effect be a year newer, and if you're making a purchase of this type you may as well get exactly what you want, and you might also miss some of the bad snow and ice. It's no fun driving a valuable car during that type of weather. If I were you, I'd book yourself a nice reg no. as well when you're at it.

Good luck with the new car.

You mentioned pouring money into your old car to keep it on the road, if road tax is an issue it must be a big engined BMW, if the NCT is an issue it must be in sh1t really :)

Would you? If you really wanted the car and got a better trade in than waiting til January and didn't care too much about depreciation.

I've merged these threads as there is no point in having 2 on a similar topic by the same poster:)
