    Hi,

    I've 3 columns in excel - A - B - C.

    A = First Name
    B = Last name
    C = A value

    Theres about 30,000 entries, I'm trying to count how many totals A would have, regardless of what the last name is. Is there any quick way of doing this in excel?

    Thanks.

    Try a filter on A for the name you want.
    Then just highlight all the visible entries.
    Should show you the totals, but it's a manual process...

    you can just use the subtotal option and subtotal column A

    Should have said, for mutiple names, EG there was 30 John Smiths, C would have the total of 30.

    So its not just a easy matter of adding up A

    Fastest way and simplest is to use the inbuilt Pivot table feature.
    There are others like the formula DSUM, but pivots are quickest, don't be put off by the apparent complexity - and if you need tips post back.

    ok - so you want to do a count of the number of people with the same name?

    so the sum of the number of "column a + column b" ?

    Why not just do a pivot which counts rather than sums?

    Basically I want to count the total of first names (A). But when there was the same first and last name, used more then once, C comes into play. So for example. John Adams has 1 value but John Smith has the value of 30, so the total for John's = 31.

    If that makes sense?

    so in this case the second name doesn't matter

    you want a sum of column C for all given values of column A?

    As was said above, a pivot table is the way to go

    I think you confused everyone by mentioning columsn B and C which had no baring at all!

    Glad you got sorted though.
