Sorry, i'm not sure what forum to post this in. I'm looking for one device that can ....

Alllow me watch rte and bbc (so saorview and freesat channels.) Allow me program them in the order I want. Connect via a scart or hdmi cable. Allow me play movies from a hard drive (or have a hard in it that I can copy movies over to.)

    I think what i'm after is a multimedia/combo box.

    Any help?

Ariva 120 combo ticks all those boxes, as do many more I am sure.

It doesn't have MHEG5 so not 'Saorview Approved' ....

The Triax HD-537 box has MHEG 5 text on both satellite and Saorview. It has a USB port that allows a Hard Disk or Pen Drive to be connected to allow recording and live pause.

It is not Freesat or Saorview approved and will not allow you to automatically update channels if the transmission details change so it is not for anyone who not comfortable making manual changes to their boxes. However I like it :D

I take by manual changes, you mean just changing codes for channels in setup?

Also, while you say that both record to an external hard drive - but can they play movies/avi's that I have on the external hard drive (similar to a media player).

Also, does such a device exist yet that allows recording sat and watching sat at the same time?

Johnboy1951 - Thanks for the info on the Ariva 120, but I think because it won't be compatible with future text options (which hopefully will include series link), it probably rules it out.

Yes, that is why I mentioned it although not listed as a requirement ;)

I bought one, on the basis that in 12 months or so I will likely have different requirements and maybe RTÉ will have, by then, decided what they will use MHEG5 for ..... and let us all know! There should also be suitable approved STBs available - I hope.

Johnboy1951 - Will it play downloaded movies from the external hard drive? i.e. the avi's, etc. It doesn't say anything about that on the descriptions I can find about it - just that it'll play what you record from the tv.

It will play audio and video content on the drive.

There are limitations on the format of the audio and video as well as the container format.
So, in some cases, a file may have to be transcoded to a suitable format to be successful.
This - from what I read - is not an unusual situation in such devices. Must admit it is not a limitation I am familiar with, as my Linux OS handles just about anything in the way of media files.

Audio file playback is limited to MP3, FLAC & OGG

Video file containers are limited to

AVI, MKV, MPEG, MPG, VOB, TS, TRP, MP4 & DVR (its own recordings)

    Video Codecs : mpeg2 & H.264
    Audio Codecs : MP3, AAC, & AC3

There is a manual on line which I suggest you get if you have an interest in this device. It should answer most questions that arise.
