My mother is 44 she is a homemaker never was on the live register. She wants to know can she join FAS to do a course that will help her find part-time work? Will she be means tested I have checked out the website and cannot find much info on the matter. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

If she's looking to enter the workforce, then of course she can register with them.

And she may find that the rules let her into courses without having been looking for work for X months too.

Means tested only applied to benefits: if she's wanting social welfare, that's a totally different question and she needs to see Welfare.

Just to let eveyone know....I was made redundant and i went into the fas office to register with them...When i met with a SUPERVISOR he asked me why i was there.I told him i wanted to register with fas to get help looking for employment or a suitable course to gain employment. HE asked me did social welfare send me over...I said no i came over my self..He said YOU ONLY COME OVER TO US IF THE SOCIAL WELFARE SEND YOU TO REGISTER...Other wise just keep looking online on the fas website because it has the same info as been in the office....Goodluck...

Sounds strange. I registered with Fás a good bit before I registered with SW. Although I was told I'd need to be registered with SW in order to benefit from work placements and the like it didn't preclude me from registering in itself.

scoop your mum can register with FAS even if she is not receiving welfare. However priority is given to people who are on the live register when it comes to FAS courses. If she is fortunate enough to get a place on a course she will not beentitled to a FAS payment which is in line with an individuals welfare payment. She can do a FAS nigh course but would have to pay around 150 -200 euro. Could your mum sign for credits with social welfare?
