I've heard before that the rule of thumb for the suggested cost of an engagement ring is 3 months salary...which personally I think is a load of gick!

But are people still applying this mentality in these (and I hate this phrase) 'recessionary times'..? Wouldn't really matter for me though, 3 times fu(k all is still fu(k all!!

What if you're unemployed? Are we off the hook?

    Larger in the USA afaik.

In Britain and Ireland we generally go 1-2 months. Seems reasonable imo.

Or if you prefer, just wrench some quasi-gem from your mother's paw and pass it off as an heirloom, rejection of which would be of serious insult to the family.

    €188 x 12 = €2,200

That would buy you a very decent engagement ring, although probably not in gold.

I got a vintage ring from the states for $1200. Got it valued here at €9k, so yeah, pretty much 3 months net salary.

Unless you are with a cnut of a woman, I don't think it should matter how much you spend on the engagement ring.
