My friends car was hit by a UK reg car when it was parked. The Uk car then drove off. Big scrape the whole length of the car. We have the registration of this car. How can we make an insurance claim though. The guard in the station said that she was not sure what to do, she would check with her supervisor and call back later but never did.

Report the incident to your insurance company. They will check if the vehicle is currently insured in the UK and will confirm the registered keepers details.

They will follow up as it is their best interests to ensure the responsible party pays for the repairs.

Just make sure you get a report from the guards and forward it to your insurance company.

If your friend has comprehensive insurance, they can make a claim through their own insurance. They will then trace the UK vehicle and try to recover the amount paid from the UK insurer.
If there is only TPFT cover contact the MIBI (motor insurers bureau of ireland), you can claim from the MIBI under either Irish visitors agreement or uninsured driver agreement. If it turns out the other vehicle was not insured and your friend has comprehensive cover, they will have to claim from their own insurance but make sure to get something from the gardai confirming the other vehicle was uninsured this will then protect their NCB. If its TPFT cover the MIBI will look after it.

As the injured party your friend can got to the UK Insurance Database and pay £3.75.

With this you can type in the registration of the vehicle and
If the registration is found on the MID, you will receive on screen the insurance details: policy number, name of insurer and the claims contact details to help you progress a claim.

I would NOT do a "Free check" before paying the £3.75 as the Free search is strictly for your own vehicle.
If you do a free check and a few minutes later a paid search is carried out on the same car you could find yourself in bother.

    Dont bother.

You pay premiums for this service.

Get your insurer to do it for you. They can write a letter of allegations to the Third Party Insurer on your behalf aswell.

If it is a UK car you have to deal with the MIBI. They will handle the UK insurer if any.
