    Hey folks,

Had a problem last week, laptop went belly up, HDD issue
luckily enough had taken a backup of the system a week previously, unfortunately it was a straight data dump. In the mean time I plugged my iphone 4 into an old pc and it synched with a year old backup

So I have rebuilt my laptop and reinstalled iTunes, I tried to copy the itunes folder in my docs into the new system and it's not really playing ball.

My question is, I have all the data, what's the best way of getting itunes back to where it was.

    thanks in advance peeps

How is it not playing ball? If we know the problem, it might be easier to advice you on how to fix it :)

Ah I see yer point :D

Basically when I copied the itunes directory from my old HDD (My music folder) and then pasted it into the new machine on top of the itunes folder there.

When I open up itunes after, it says there is an error with the library, it will rename it as damaged and create a new library. I end up with a clean install of itunes again. When I get itunes to look for mp3/aac files I can see it searching the system (song names popping up etc) and when it finishes it appears like it hasn't picked up anything, when I click on the music tab (top left of navigation pane) it doesn't do anything.

I'm not really too worried about the library, I can build that back up, pain in the pass that it is, what I really want to get at it the restore/bakup files for my iphone.

Thanks for the reply and help would be great
    Cheers

There is a programme called sharepod (I think) that will copy everything from you Apple device into your iTunes library. Used this when I had the similar problem as yourself. May work for you.

thanks for the reply, the problem is after the crach when I plugged the phone into an older machine it synced and I lost aps (not a real issue) but the data associated with aps. What I'd really like to do is take the restore file from my hdd and resynch my phone from that.

P.S. I really can't wait till the cut the tie with itunes in IOS 5, hopefully that will be the end of all these types of issues!

The backups are stored in c:username/appdata/ then either in local and then iTunes or roaming and then iTunes
