Might be looking at a few of these over the coming days.
At a guess I would say between 2000 and 2002 models.

    Anything to watch out for?
Any ideas as to specific models ? ( SE etc. ?)
    Any known problems with them?

    Vectra,

Look out for the same stuff you'd look out for on any vag yoke...no mistique to them at all.

Hope you find a good one.

look out for leak in the passenger footwell, they can leak in from the pollen filter, lift carpets and have a good feel around, also the doors can fill with water if the drain holes become blocked and water can seep over the sill and into footwells, other than that just the usual really, ive never had any problems with my own not even the water problem, there was a problem with the early leons a pipe would corrode on the braker servo and it was covered by seat as it was a recall keep and eye out for that

Buy a standard one and not a felt spec model. They were the felter of choice for a while. Window regs, door seals as mentioned and make sure all the electrics work. It's not unknown for a few gremlins to be in there. Check out an Ibiza PD130 too. Rare but a little rocket due to the weight.

From 2002 onwards the Golf got a suspension and other bits like that upgraded.
I do not know how this filters down into Seats but its worth finding out.

Depending what you want the car for I would be in favour of sticking to the 90 (AGR and ALH) and 110 (AFN??) HP engines as they are pre PD and pre VAG TDI's becoming god awful.

Though I wouldnt let myself get totally put off PD TDI's. If they are well taken care of and always had the CORRECT OIL then you should be alright.

I am at 173000 miles on my AGR and the only problems that I have had since 150 is an oil leak and a temperature sensor.

On the temp sensor note they can go. About 20 quid to get, a DIY to fix and yer grand.

Presuming the Seats suffer the same mark 4 gremlins:

As mentioned the pollen filter can let in water.
As mentioned check the drains under the doors.
If it has a sunroof check the drains and cut the tips off them.

Those mark 4's like letting water in. I just fixed the sunroof drains because I forgot to clean them every month :/ Fixed it permanently now, I chopped the ends off the drain pipes. No need worrying about it now though. Very easy fix.

I imagine it would be easier to find a lower mileage Leon that was well cared for, many of the Toledo would be ex rep mobiles I reckon, a Leon is a nicer bus too I think.

I wouldn't go for a 110bhp as turbos in them aren't great...also check that the central locking works...they can give trouble with boost solenoids sometimes and also the boost pipes will almost certaintly need replaced cause they split over time.

like a previous poster stated id stay away from the felt spec stuff unless thats what your into! it seems alot for a 00 with 132k miles and new gearbox, personnally it screams boy racer to me

even with vrt this would be a better buy i reckon http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/great-driving-seat-toledo-19tdi-not-audi-bmw-vauxhall-ford-focus-astra-megane-toledo-golf/86977630

I agree looks like a trader selling the Irish Car - It looks great but maybe a little too great. and whats the story with the swapping around of the alloys, in one picture they have been removed from the golf and put on the Toledo!

Anyway a Toledo is a Leon just with a boot! -Keep looking for a good one and put a nice set of alloys on yourself.

    VE

First I've heard of any of that. With regards to turbos.
Is what you think based on the 110 VE or a similarly powered PD?

I've 240,000 on my Tdi and there's no sign of it stopping. Sumps are awful weak on them, most bits are cheaply got for them as they're pretty much the same as a Golf/Bora.

I looked at a few recently when the brother in law was changing and alot of them were rough as badgers. Some with 110/120k on them and driving no where near as tight as mine.

    Do you know of one?

Ive had my 110bhp 99 toledo for the last 6 months, hasn't kicked up one bit of fuss. The only wee thing is my gearbox is a bit weak but otherwise its going grand.

Just beware of buying heaps of scrap that young guys have the ar$e driven out of. Some guys re map them to 140+ which leads to all sorts of issues.

Just take it handy and you'll get your 60.5 mpg like my wagon :P

May be looking at a Toledo 110 tomorrow..Fingers crossed this one will be good.

    306 Hdi?

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/donedeal/classifieds/viewFullPhoto.jsp?cid=7751481&ad=2484695

The Hdi was a far more refined engine then the PD TDI of its day.

I don't really understand what your argument is?

'Felt spec is the modifcation of mainly VAG diesel cars with things like crap looking replica wheels from more expensive models, oversized sunvisors, hideous bodykits with chickenwire grilles and misleading badging that is sometimes contradictory (B6 Audi RS4 TDI etc etc.)

My argument is that not all 'felt spec' cars are wrecked.

Ugly bodykits arent felt spec lol...do you know what felt is?

Currently have an 05 PD150 Leon and its a great car, great runabout with great fuel economy. 2nd time owning the same car after periods of time with both a B5 S4 and B5 RS4 Audis. No match for the effortlessness of both of those cars or the fit and finish and quality but the Leon is pretty well screwed together and takes some of the better parts from the VAG bins. As mentioned previously, watch out for water ingress in various places. Mine hasnt misssed a beat in 103k miles apart from a coolant temp sensor, always serviced on the button with correct fluids and parts, mechanically well cared for. Also another common fault is unexplained rattles in the boot lid, most of them have a problem but can be solved by adjusting the rod from the handle to the catch and putting in some bits of foam or rubber to dampen out the vibrations.

I remember seeing somewhere a few years ago that the Leon/Toledo was the most reliable out of the PQ34 platform VAG cars....no doubt I cant find that article now...

Good luck in the search anyway :)

I can see both sides here guys
But to be fair there are a lot of Hidiously modified cars out there NOT in the vag range.

Can these be called "Felt spec" also?

In that link volvoman put up I just grabbed this line
'Felt spec is the art of badly modifying a VAG diesel car

    As McP2011 Said
Not all can be considered felt spec as some of them are nicely kitted and to be fair to their owners they have spent a lot of money on them. Not to replicate more expensive models but more so to personalize their cars.

I don't see any problem with nicely modded ones but as for the die hard "Felt Speccers"

    Back on topic

heading off up the country again in the morning to look at a Toledo 110
Hopefully this one will be good.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Thats why I didn't say 110 PD. There was a 103ish HP and a 114ish HP PD, similarly enough powered to the 110 VE.

I have never read anything bad in terms of the turbos in relation to the old 110 HP VE so I wanted to confirm to make sure.

well, After 1300 kilometers of driving we finally got this one.

Got fed up with looking at $hiteboxes belonging to clowns telling this one is mint and that one is 100%
    Mother of divine..!!
The drive from Cork to Edenderry was the last straw.
Almost bought a '04 that was very tastefully done, but (Vectra B ) wanted Black :p
    What ye reckon?
Not a rattle of sqeak or knock out of it.
    Drives like a new one.
Few little bits to sort out but only cosmetic item that might add up to €50 or so,
Serviced just before I collected it.
Timing kit done. couple of bushings replaced.
90bhp model but pulls like first day.
    Full service history included.

Well done Vectra. I have a soft spot for the 90hp TDI. :o
By no means the quickest car about but if you get the right gear and rev situation there is a pleasing bit of pull.
Whack a remap on that some day and it will be lovely. Apparently my turbo is too old (173,000 miles) for a remap.
EDIT: Ahh, yers is 180,000 miles. Feck.

A pity they didnt do an estate Toledo/Leon. One of the nicest mark 4 cars around.
