Cascarino controversy over holocaust comment.

"Having a holocaust" - Never heard that saying before...
A football pundit has sparked outrage after he described a player as having a "holocaust" of a game.
Tony Cascarino made the inflammatory comment on Sky Sports News during a match between Manchester United and Arsenal which saw the north London team suffer a crushing 8-2 defeat.
Discussing defender Armand Traore's performance on the pitch, Cascarino said: "Poor Traore at right back is having a holocaust because he's finding himself against (United winger) Nani, who's literally running him from everywhere and (Arsenal midfielder Andrey) Arshavin's just not tracking his runners."
Angry fans immediately hit out at his comments on micro-blogging site Twitter.
One user wrote: "Tony Cascarino should be sacked on the spot. He said an Arsenal defender was having a "holocaust". Apallingly ignorant."
Another shocked social networker added: "I CANT BELIEVE HE SAID THAT!" while one observed: "Looks like Tony Cascarino could be the next ex-pro on the persona non-gratis list after that on air comment..." Another micro-blogger branded the comment "horrendous", adding: "I hope Tony Cascarino is dealt with appropriately".
A clip of the incident, broadcast during the Old Trafford clash, quickly appeared on YouTube.
Sky Sports News said presenter Natalie Sawyer had apologised straightaway for Cascarino's remarks.
It said in a statement: "Tony Cascarino made his comments in the heat of the moment. An immediate apology on behalf of Tony and Sky Sports was made on air as soon as possible for any offence caused."

At least he didn't say he was raped.

the word had a meaning before WWII. Sounds like people looking for controversy, again. And the day we look to "social networkers" to set our moral compasses by, is the day I head for the hills with the family and the shotgun.

Storm in a teacup. He misused a phrase, hardly like he's gone and denied/tried to justify the thing. What the hell is with news sites quoting people on twitter? I don't care what some micro-blogger writes.

Total over-reaction. Press should focus on the fact Cascarino is a complete twat as opposed to ignorant slips of the tongue.

Gas man that Cascarino, he needs to concentrate more

Maybe it's the fact that it's a North London club. Though Spurs would be better known for that demographic
If a North of England club had their player singled out I doubt this would be picked up on at all

Use myself when someone has had a bad game and know loads of people who do as well.

I'm sure the Armenian community will be up in arms about it.

It's a storm in a teacup alright but it could be blown out of proportion.

I think if he said it on Irish tv it would probably be largely ignored.

Good thing he didn't say Nani was having a stormer...east coast of America would be up in arms.

    Where does it stop?

"Until Shamrock Rovers recently, the famine endured and the Irish were starved of success in Europe"

    Nobody would find that offensive.
Though the odd loon out there might

The worst part was that the lovely Natalie Sawyer was forced to apologise for him live on air.

Cascarino says that the whole time. It's just that all the other times nobody was listening to him.And they were all correct.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,370 ✭✭✭✭Son Of A Vidic

Surely a word will or will not offend depending on the context of its use? Considering Cascarino used it to describe a horiffic performance, it's amazing it caused any offence. PC rubbish gone mad yet again.

Now if he said - " I'm going to have such a good time on the town tonight, I'll leave the place like a Holocaust." Now that undoubtedly could cause offence, it's all about the context.

Now if he had said "left-back is an Accident Black Spot" it might even have true.

Cas is a fool because I bet it is not part of his day to day language.
I bet he wanted to use a big word to make himself sound intelligent but when he opened his gob the word holocaust came out.

I like Cas myself tbh. The world is gone mad if people are offended. The word massacre is more commonly used to describe a hammering in sport and there has been alot of real massacres worldwide and in particular the US in recent times. Besides compared to what Okey Dokey Bill O'Herlihy said about the twin towers crumbling (referring to the German centre backs) a few years ago its tame by comparison

I usually agree with the majority here and say who cares?

At the same time though...having a holocaust? Who the hell says that? Its like he intentionally tried to provoke a reaction!

Why did this post, a smiley face pointing out a pun, get more thanks than the actual post by MikeMac? That's the one thing I really hate about the Soccer forum.

There were two brilliant puns in MikeMac's post, and it seems nobody picked up on the other one!

How very dare you, its NATALIE SAWYER!

Anyway, I think she might be of Jewish descent herself. Not basing it on anything other than Natalie has origins as a Jewish first name, she is half Eastern European, and dark haired. So basically a complete guess and there is every possibility I am talking out of an orifice that isn't my mouth.

I thought all Sawyers were scheming Southron charmers.
