There was a guy teaching in Finglas Village for a long time, but last I heard the club was dwindling and they were thinking of closing it. That was about 4 years ago. It may have perked up again though you never know.

Kenpo generally doesn't seem to have much of a following these days.

Does the IKKU still have a club around St. Vincent's? You could check them out OP if it's still on the go.

There's one in the finglas leisure centre and it's been there for years. Tony Dillon is the instructors name and he's one of the best!! Oh the memory's....

I blame the declining popularity of the ronnie

Should do, it's the head club of the organisation, Paul Brennan is the main instructor there, lovely guy. Was in the portmarnock branch of the ikku for about 16 years, good place to train with no nutters :D

    hi true blue ,

i would like to say that if you are considering joining a Kenpo club or any other martial arts club for that matter the question should be which instructor .

I study Kenpo and lived in coolock and traveled to ballyfermott . i then moved to dublin 15 and still travel to the same instructor . it is worth the extra effort if you find the right Instructor that suits you .

there are many instructors in kenpo out there but only few with proven records and true standings in the Irish Kenpo scene .

if you would like to chat about this or would like to try my instructors club PM me and i can give you details of either option

oh and to let you know there are different types of Kenpo .

the more commonly known and more wide spread is Modern/american/tatum's these are all from the Ed Parkers kenpo system all the same with slight changes .

    there is traditionall kenpo

and Ry-Uko kenpo which is also a traditional martial art

also there is a tiger kenpo which is more of a kung foo style if im not mistaken ( im open to correction on this 1 )

i was originally a traditionall kenpoist and changed over to Modern / Ed Parkers kenpo in the mid 90's and still train with this style and instructor .

I would recomened a modern kenpo club that has more than 1 instructor and more than 1 black belt .

( for instance our club has a 7th , 2x 6ths , a 4th , 2 x 3rds ,a 2nd and 3 first degree's that can all help with the classes and help teaching which means that you can always get attention of a high grade to help you .or when the main instructor cant make a night the slack is taken up and never misses a beat ) you also can get the best of all worlds like this as some may be into forms more and others into techniques whilst others like me are into the fightin aspect .

    Thanks all for the replies.

Also, I have just heard of a guy, Tony O'Reilly starting in Finglas in the next few weeks. He said he teaches American Kenpo, affiliated to AKKI and is under direct instruction from Grand Master Paul Mills.

I'm hoping to find somewhere close so that my kids can make their own way. I might take you up on your offer though.

I went to school there. I trained briefly (about 30 years ago). I don't even remember what style it was. Could it have been the same Kenpo?

Thank again and I'll look into these.

    Irish Kenpo Karate Union -

There used to be some real characters training there, Des Cunningham and Shay Ryan to name a few, a wealth of martial arts knowledge between them .They're "retired" now I believe. Not many retirees in the martial arts world to my knowledge. Funny thing that.

I agree that its always better to choose a club based on the instructor, not the location. There is a kenpo club in kingswood, Tallaght that is run by a grandmaster (10th degree), an associate master (8th degree, she is also the highest ranked woman in Europe) a 3rd degree, 3 1st degrees and a handfull of junior black belts. Here's the website: kingswoodkenpo.com
I know its a bit of a journey but I would recommend giving it a try :)
