Just heard about Bolt's false-start. . .was anyone watching? Was it close?

Most blatant false start i have seen.

I think its harsh that one false start is a disqualification, years of training all lost because of a rush of blood to the head.

Couldn't believe it :O rule is rubbish anyway:mad:
Collins said in an interview afterwards 'Bolt is mad and will want revenge on us' when asked about the 200. WR revenge? I hope so!!:D

Bolt will destroy the field in the 200m but I don't think he'll take the WR.

Bolts DQ is not the most unfortunate thing I've seen so far in the championships. That shame lies with the shortening of Le Shawn Merritt's two year drugs ban to allow him to compete in these championships. He was very impressive this morning but he shouldn't even be there.
    Go Kirani!!!

The rule for Bolt is the same as itwas for Dwain Chambers. It was a pity for him too as it's likely to be his last major championships. Its Joanne Cuddihy I feel sorry for, I thought she was set for a good run.

As someone who's been the victim of it once or twice, I agree. . .I can't imagine doing it at that level though. . .

Yep, he is the best thing about athletics at the moment. . .can't believe Collins medalled, he was very poor at the Diamond League. . .

Agreed, but its a great story. . .pure David vs evil Golaith. . .you cant deny it's gonna be real theatre in the final if the crowd get behind Kirani. . .

She certainly had us hoping. . .I'd take one finallist at this stage, Hession or Derval. . .would love to see Derval do the business again. . .

The Korean people couldn't tell LaShawn Merritt from Matthew Le Tissier. Seriously, besides Bolt, and maybe Xiang, they don't know who any of the athletes are, so don't expect the crowd to be getting behind one athlete over the other.

Jeez just seen Cuddihy there now, false start by a wide margin. On the Bolt false start he will come back better for it.

Looks like Bolt's false start may be enough for them to change the rule...

Am I the only one not to be sorry about this ? I read an article about/with him a while ago and found nothing likeable about the man, and his arrogance at the start did him no favours either. Ok, when you have the talent to back it up a little arrogance is expected but he seems to be just a dick.

Glad I'm not the only one. From the first time he came on the scene his showboating annoyed me.
I was very surprised this morning when he made a complete mess of the start and his behaviour after did'nt do him any favours.

If he just quietly stood at the start line as the clearly fastest person on the planet, and then walked straight off after being DQ'ed then he'd be accused of having no passion.

I much prefer his style, of enjoying himself, than the attitude that was given off by all the 100m athletes before his time. Which was just looking grumpy and as if it was rude of us to point a camera in their face before the start.

He was grumpy enough after. Would'nt give interviews (all others who had been DQ'd did). According to C4 he went missing and even his manager could'nt find him. His style is great when he's winning but no style when he's losing. If he wants to be the centre of attention he should take the bad with the good. Wasn't so media friendly today:rolleyes:

Nah, don't think so. You can be a passionate athlete without being disrespectful to everyone else on the start line.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭MrCreosote

I never understood why looking relaxed before a race and celebrating afterwards is "disrespecting" the other athletes. Just because he has a different routine...if the others get psyched out by it then too bad.

Terrible false start though. I wonder why it happened? Lapse of concentration or loss of confidence after all the injuries lately?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭kingcharles82

silly false start rule, do they not want one of the best athletes in the world winning???

Did you see it ? There's a difference between looking relaxed and gesturing to the cameras that the rest of the competitors on the line with you are nothing in the race.

Kingcharles, the rule applies to everyone, there's no conspiracy that it's just to remove him from the race, he did that quite well by himself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 134 ✭✭kingcharles82

i understand the rule is for everyone but after one false start is that enough to disqualify any athlete, as an earlier person wrote, these athletes put years of training in and are all at the top physical condition entering major competitions, just a shame its so easy to get disqualified thats just my opinion

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,320 ✭✭✭MrCreosote

When your PB is 3% faster than everyone else in the race, I don't think it's unreasonable to point out the obvious. Hardly disrespecting, more like gamesmanship. If it affects the others well that's their fault.

Made the false start all the worse of course.

    Who's 'they'?

HE is responsible for getting himself thrown out of the race.

This is the best result from the race anyway. Gets everybody talking about it. What's the alternative- Bolt winning easily against a weakened field in a time way off the world record. Much better this way IMO

When your PB is 3% better than everybody else you don't need to try to take a flyer!! Bolt is an absolute legend but maybe lapsed in concentration today and false started. I applauded the way he accepted it was him but if the earlier posters are correct that he wouldn't do any interviews, then thats just acting like a spoilt brat. All the other DQ athletes did, including Dwain Chambers who has received plenty of negative publicity from the same press in the past. If Bolt wants the media acclaimation when he wins, he should also be co-operative when he inflicts defeat upon himself.

Lets not forget that Yohan Blake is the World Champion and it was great to see Kim Collins get on the podium again.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,029 ✭✭✭Pisco Sour

i, just a shame its so easy to get disqualified thats just my opinion

How many sprinters have competed in these championships so far? How many have false started. 99% of people have been able to stay in their blocks until the gun is fired. Hardly "easy" to get DQ'ed, when it's a tiny minority who have false started. Bolt is just one person, despite what people would like to think. The rule applies to everyone. The fact we are giving so much discussion to it now is a bit of an insult to other sprinters. Most people wouldn't have cared if Kim Collins false started! There's more to athletics than Usain Bolt.

Bolt still keeping quiet about the issue...

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/athletics/14706052.stm

Nope, he just didn't go and stand in front of a camera immediately afterwards.

Not like him to be camera shy is it.

Speaking before the 2009 World Championships in Berlin, Bolt said: "For me, I have no problem, I never false-started yet. It will be better for the sport.

"It will be a problem for some people but not for me."

    Case closed.

I just watched the start again and noticed Blake to the right of Bolt moves forward just before Bolt false starts, It could be the reason he false started and could have appealed at the time ?

    Nah

People need to accept that Bolt false started and just move on with it! He'll blitz the 200m don't worry.

    Bolt's made a statement here:

    http://daegu2011.iaaf.org//NewsListDetail.aspx?id=61516

Very gracious in defeat if you ask me. Not looking for excuses or blaming anyone else- a true champion!

The guy is a class act. A credit to the sport, and a credit to the world of sport. He reminds me of the great Ali. He is more than juts a track star.
Full of fun, personality and enthusiasm. A great character.

It is hard on athletes, it is the same in competitive swimming.....

Never knew what to think about it, it gave an opportunity to others sadly and happily depending. It also demonstrate that at this level there is no mistakes allowed, you are a pro and that's it. But is it sports really ?

Really don't know what to think about this, I suppose we just need to follow the rules.

Seems to me his grandstanding shows little respect for his fellow competitors - have to say i dont feel sorry for him. His lack of courtesy afterwards spoke volumes.

That rule doesn't apply to distance races.

god forgive me but the first thing that came to mind was - betting fix -? i mean to come second delib would be a bit obvious for a guy like this. better not to start at all. sorry i'm not usually this synical. just can't believe he false started like that.

I don't think you are being at all cynical. This is the world of sport, and if athletes are prepared to do drugs to win, earn money etc, then nothing is beneath them. It's a possibility.

    Highly doubt it.

Looks to me more like he was going for a good start to try and produce something special just like he had done in Berlin. Possibly in better shape than he had let on this season to try and create dramatic effect. This guy really wants to be a legend of the sport and his appearance fees throughout the season plus sponsorship make him an athlete who isnt exactly stuck for money the guy demands a six figure appearance fee for most races plus if you look at prize money on top of this.
