as the title suggests I'm just wondering what people think of the subject choices in 4th year -> capturejr.jpg

I pretty sure of 15 of the 21 credits, them being, Project Mgmt (6 credits), Offshore Eng (3 Credits), Sustainable Eng & Env Systems (6 Credits)
but I'm unsure on the last 6 credits I veering towards Business, Management & Finance (6 credits) as I hope to pursue a masters in Business Management next year
I would love to hear peoples opinions on them . . like what subjects are easier and well laid out! cheers in advance

I'm just after finishing the year so I can tell you what I thought.

The subjects I did were Project Management, Offshore Engineering, Business Management and Finance and the Design of water, wastewater and waste.

On reflection I'm happy with the subjects I went with. Of those I though Project Management was the toughest with a lot of small projects and stuff to do. There's a good bit in it too but its a subject thats well worth doing.

Offshore Engineering was grand. I'm not sure if the lecturer (Dr Mullarkey) has retired now, I think he has. He was grand but god the notes were poor, but slightly better than those he has for onshore engineering. This is a subject I did well in even though I only attended one lecture all year. The area itself I found very interesting regardless of the presentation of notes. It would be a great subject if it was presented better.

Business, Management and Finance I really liked. Its a mix of some basic accounting/finance with some management theory and industrial relations theory. The finance part of the module accounts for 50% and is pretty reasonable. The management accounts for 25% and the industrial relations another 25%. I found it good and was happy with the result. You'll definately get over 70% with a reasonable effort. I'm actually about to start a masters in Finance right now but I'd definately reccomend doing it if your planning on looking elsewhere outside of Civil Engineering. Even as a Civil Enginerring module its fairly strong.

Design of Water, Wastewater etc... I generally did this as it was related to my final year project. I liked it and would recommend it to anyone. Its not one of the more popular ones, but I guess thats down to subject matter.

I know plenty of people did Sustainanble and loved it.

Computational Methods had very mixed reports. Would only do it if your into structural analysis. Its a popular one. Another popular one is inelastic structural design. Its pretty much a continuation of the steel design module in first semester, with the same lecturer (PO'H). Most who did it liked it.
I did'nt do geology but apparently its dead handy.
Hydraulics as opposed to Hyrology is an interesting module in that you have different guest lecturers from week to week. A good few did it. I did it myself for 3 weeks in second semester until I changed at the last minute to do Offshore. Its definately interesting though.

    Advanced Concrete never ran.

That would be my two cents anyway. You have a good three weeks at the start of each semester to make your mind up. You should go to a good few of the different modules to get a feel for them.

My biggest tip for final year would be to get cracknig on possible final year project titles and to try and get a good lecturer as your supervisor within a week or two of returning. Generally most of the younger lecturers are the ones to get, although it depends on the subject matter. Actually most of them are probably ok, just a few I heard people having awful problems with. I think the biggest offenders have actually just retired.

Cheers, really appreciate that! The mud is a bit clearer now, hope Mullarkey isn't retired he's usually handy enough around exams & that, did u pick your subjects on registration & then change, or did u just leave the subjects blank and then pick after a week or two in college?

Actually having looked at the staff roster on the website he's still there. There were rumours. He's very predictable with exams alright, the main reason I did Offshore.

Ya I picked what I thought I was doing for registration and changed again when the time suited.
