My young lad is considering purchasing a 2005 Ford Focus 1.6 with 85,000 miles. His first car. How much should he pay for it ? Seems in fairly good condition with only one previous owner. I think the miles are a bit much but maybe i'm wrong. Any advice would be appreciated.

Anywhere between €5k and €5.5k my guess. Saloons are worth a little less than hatchbacks. Base LX models are worth less than Zetec/Ghia models because they are less sought after.

€5,500 to €6,000 off the top of my head.

A 2005 should have a odometer in Km, 85000 isn't excessive for Km (15000/yr x 6). I have such a car and am happy with it, the 1.6 is reasonably powerful for most needs.

Petrol or diesel ? 12-16k miles per year would be about average on a petrol these days.

The 1.6 petrol focus is a very good car, and a far better buy than the very sluggish 1.4 paddy engined special.

The 1.6 petrol is harder to find though, if it's the 1.6 petrol, ford recommend the timing belt is changed at 100,000 miles / 8 years, on this particular model, or the dealer may do it now for you as part of the deal.

Bought a Zetec 05 recently from a Ford Dealer. Paid 5500 , two years nct and warranty. Nice to have a warranty with modern cars . dealers are keen to sell and are taking a smaller margin now :D

Good decision to go for the 1.6 btw. The 1.4 is very underpowered.
