USB Ports Not Recognising Devices

My 6-month old HP laptop has suddenly stopped recognising my external hard drive, pen drives etc.

Is there something simple that I can check? There are 4 USB slots and none of them are working, so I'm guessing it's a system problem?

    Thanks.

    2 things you can try..

I take it you've got Windows 7, not 100% sure how you get to device manager, try typing it in search, or right click on mycomputer, then properties, (advanced/device manager) go to bottom of the list of the devices, USB Hub, right click on it and click uninstall.

Then restart the computer, and the drivers should be re-installed. This may fix the problem.

Second option is phone 1890 902 923 and tell HP about the problem and they should talk you thru fixing it.

The uninstalling/restarting bit done the trick.

    Thanks for your help.

I had a similar issue with my PC after doing a reformat and install.
Connect an external h/d and the blue light on it would flash and you could hear it clicking on and off.
Did as you suggested and all seems well now.
    Thanks
