Hi Guys, I am a possible mature student starting in 2 weeks and need some info.
Has anyone done the 3 year Music Tech course at NUIM. Whats the job prospects after you get the degree? I heard that very few actually get good work out of it. I am due to pay fees soon and don't know whether I have the time let alone the money to spare.
I was very keen to do this course but now not so sure.
    Any help would be appreciated.

the jobs market is a rocky road at the moment, I wouldnt let which job decide your course , sure look at everyone who does anthropology :pac: , if its music tech you want to do, do it , if its a job you want , id reccomend sliding over to computer science, you have 3 years of a course to go through , who knows there could be some music based boom by the end of that

I finished a masters in music tech this year. From my experience it is next to impossible to get a job in this area. If you do decide to go ahead with it I suggest you do all of the "techie" electives - computer programming etc. That way you could go into main stream programming when you come out.

Treat it the same as you'd treat any other undergrad degree, in that it doesn't necessarily determine the career you'll get so much as it brings you up the ladder to the level of 'graduate' in the eyes of a prospective employer; and provides you with some useful academic and real-world skills in an area that you're (hopefully) interested in.

I've always believed that the best degree to do is the one you'll enjoy, because you're far more likely to excel at it. If Music Tech. is your thing then you're going to get more out of it than someone who goes into it only for the prospect of a particular related career.

There are jobs to be had in the area, but like anything else these days you'll have to invest in yourself (in terms of effort, skills and perhaps even equipment) to really get the most out of it.
Neither a masters nor a bachelor degree guarantee a job these days, if they ever did.

Bear in mind as well that the Music Tech. course at NUIM produced its first batch of graduates just before the bubble burst here in Ireland, so the people who finished the course are in the same boat as anyone else since everything went to hell; and that's inevitably going to colour opinions.
I doubt many graduates from the past few years are going to say that their particular course was great in terms of career prospects with the state of things right now.

    Hey!

I have just finished this degree and oddly enough graduated yesterday and just randomly spotted this. Weird aye? :D

Anyway, all I can say is, I'v been looking for work and couldn't find any out there and have hence returned to do a Higher Diploma in Information Technology this year.
However, I do believe it is an enjoyable course and as said above, everyone is in the same boat; a degree won't get anyone a job the way things are going. So if you enjoy it, do it.

Also, you pick up two arts subjects in first year as a safe guard for if you don't like music technology so pick up two that you could possibly go on to teach in school? Then at least you have a plan B. You also carry one arts subject so you are not strictly confined to music technology when you finish your degree. Thats all I can offer you!

    Best of luck mate! :D
