Anyone here think an chealo iPhone 4 will be competitive against the value smartphones on the market now? I don't think it will fly.

There was column from some investment mag ( Forbe's maybe) which said that some institutional investors were unhappy that Apple were leaving customers on the table. Unless you think the low level stuff will cannibalise the high level stuff - which it won't if there is significant difference - this makes perfect sense. Were I Apple I wouldn't discontinue the 3GS. That is a fine machine. I have one. It is two years old and no Android machine of that age can compete. Since Apple know how to produce the 3GS they can sell bucket loads.

I doubt that the plan is to have just two models - this years, and last years - going forward. What is amazing is that they have so much market share with 2 models, the newests is older than most Android phones on the market, by a significant margin.

At the very least there will be an 8GB iPhone 4 for a hundred less than the iPhone 5. Whether they will offer something even cheaper remains to be seen. There was a rumour about a "cloud" iPhone with little or no storage, but that makes no sense since iCloud is primarily designed for syncing data rather than streaming it.
