Should I buy the Pokemon Red from the 90's or the newer Pokemon Fire Red? I used to have the original Red and I remember it being vividly brilliant.

If you want a burst of nostalgia, go for the original. If you want a better, smoother game, go for the remake. It's full of fancy new bits such as extra areas, more Pokemon and snazzy graphics. It's even compatible with the Gen IV DS games. I will advise you to be vigilant buying it, as it's one of the most pirated GBA games ever, if not the most, and it can be quite difficult to tell'em apart from the real thing sometimes.

Fire red is Red with a few new things once you finish the story. It really depends on if you want to play more pokemon games, or just to replay it on its own.

With Fire Red, you can import your pokemon to newer Pokemon games, so your 'mon can live on in those. With red you cant do this.

Same reason people buy new FIFA games every year, or play any game in a series. For te enjoyment of it.

Its a classic game that still remains as strong today as it did when it was first released. It has continued to be a huge seller on the gameboy, gameboy advance and the DS. Not many games series can match that with the exception of maybe Mario.

Theres many aspects of the games that keep drawing people in, whether its just to finish the story, collect them all or competitive battling. Plus its one of the few games you can never really 'finish'. Ive sunk 1000+ hours into the games in the last few years, and every few months i find myself coming back to play them again and again

Thats why so many are crazy about the games

Surely this question should be prefaced with "I own the following hand-held game systems :"
Fire Red will run on a DS, DS Lite and GBA.
Red will run on a GB and GBC, and if memory serves the original GBA.

If you have the capability to play both, I'd still go with the remake. Slightly higher chance that the battery in the cart still works :) Also, you can migrate your Pokemon from the remake to Gen 4 carts, and then from Gen 4 to Gen 5 carts (2 DSes needed for this)

@ShadowHearth : It's like Jazz. If you have to ask, you wouldn't understand the answer. Have you played one? Something happens to your brain the day you decide to try and finish the game. Because you can't. Sure there's the main quest that you'll get through in about a week, but then there's filling the pokedex by seeing every single one of the buggers (600+ now?), and then you find yourself wanting to catch every one of them. And there's the battle frontier/subway to beat. And then you get into competitive online battles - which leads you into breeding for the perfect set of IVs and moves. And then you start trying to hatch shinies. Next thing you know you're arguing down the pub (this is before you give up human contact in favour of training your Pokemon, of course) about which Eevee evolution makes for the hottest Cosplay outfit (Umbreon, everyone knows that) and why Shedinja is better than a FEAR Raticate. It's the same as any MMORPG - from the outside it looks completely pointless. But get elbow deep into the stats and suddenly you're mainlining a false sense of achievement, it's awesome...

Umbreon is so damn cool. I got a little figure of him in the Pokémon Centre in New York.

It doesn't really matter where you start, the games are all quite similar.

You want to use Pokémon to keep cats away? :pac:

Fecking spell checker... Corrects stuff that is okay, then leaves faults on stuff that is wrong...

I bet ladies get very impressed when you walk in and say: hello, ladies, who wants a piece of this hot ass, which has collected all pokemons on pokemon ruby! ;)

Show is based on the games, not the other way round.

Might as well start with Black/White (Gen 5). It's not the greatest story-wise but it has the full roster of Pokemon to catch and a number of features you just don't get on the other carts. Alternatively you can pick up Platinum (Gen 4) or Heart Gold/Soul Silver (Gen 4 remakes of Gen 2) cheaply enough. And they come with the Pokewalker which ups the sad-factor of the game immeasurably! Especially if you biy them both :) General rule : games of the same Gen can trade with eachother. Games of higher Gens from 4 on can import from the immediately preceding gen.

The colours generally define which of the 2 legendaries on the box you catch near the end of the main story, and will limit what pokemon you encounter in the wild (there are version exclusives). In Gen 5, it also affects the last region on the map (Black City or White Forest) and the look of a few places. It's a bit arbitrary really but it's there to encourage kids to trade with eachother. There are no fundamental differences that would make one superior to the other really.

I find that if you try to use *anything* as a "repellant", it's bound to work. You could throw a roll of €50's and the recipe for 0% Fat 100% delicious chocolate in a woman's face and scream "Begone, foul bearer of the Vajayjay!" and she'll gather her (and your) things n' leave.

Actually, a Pokemon game is unlikely to be that effective - the cartridges are quite small so if you hold one up she'll have to get real close to see what it is, at which point she'll be trapped in the irresistible pull of your animal magnetism. You may find yourself having to ride her anyway. You poor thing.

However, you can spice an evening up by unexpectedly shouting "Catch them all!" at a critical moment. This isn't after hours, I won't go into any detail...

I think the likes of Pokémon justifies Nintendo's place on the market. I mean, it's essentially a game aimed at getting 3 year olds hooked like crackheads, while on the same hand, feeding the cravings of RPG stat-obsessed, 'hardcore' types. It's pretty typical of Nintendo's approach, really. I'd hate to be the guy in charge of making it though, imagine the number of sleepless nights involved in pulling off such a trick.

I checked some videos. I still don't get how combat works. Is it just like final fantasy games, but instead of 3 characters to control, you just got one?!

    Training them?

It's turn-based, like the early FF games. You have a team of six, and send them out one at a time. You have a choice of four moves.

Training (as in, using them in battles) gets them EXP, which levels them up and results in stat gains, learning new moves and (in most cases) they will evolve into more powerful, cooler looking forms. You can decide what four moves to give them, with certain Pokémon learning certain moves.

And in the newer versions, there's double battles & triple battles (2v2/3v3 at the same time).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,485 ✭✭✭✭Banjo

    ...and rotation battles.

Each pokemon has a type (or two types), eg Fire, water, grass. Each attack also has it's type which may or may not match the pokemon. If it does, they do STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus) damage, a little extra on top of regular damage.

Attacks are either Physical or Special; Each pokemon has an Attack and Special Attack stat, and a Defense and Special defense stat. If your pokemon has low special attack and your opponent has high special defense, you're not going to do a lot of damage.

Basically it's like Paper / Scissors / Rock except there are 17 different types. Each one is "super-effective" against some types and not so effective against others.

eg. a Fire based attack is Super Effective (double damage) against a Grass or Steel type but not effective against Water or Earth types. A pokemon of type Grass Steel would receive 4x damage, a Water Earth type would receive 1/4 damage. Grass Water would cancel out, receiving regular damage.

Also, Ghosts can't be hit by Normal or Fighting attacks, Flying types are immune to Ground attacks etc etc. but there are ways and means around this....

While your pokemon can only know 4 moves at a time, not all moves are attacks. There are moves that change your or your opponents stats, inflict "status effects" like Poisoned (lose health every round) or paralysis (may or may not be able to move on your turn), remove status effects, heal, hide behind a small doll (that sounds ****e but it's a 'king brilliant move!), swap places with another team member etc. Stat changes are lost when you swap out unless you use a special move to do it, statuses generally are not. The trick is to strike a balance between offensive and defensive capabilities, and balance your team so you can wipe the floor with anything they throw at you.

"Training" is a big part of the game. Basically it means grinding out the levels in between Trainer and Gym battles (the aim of the game is to defeat the 8 Gym Leaders, think of them as End of Level Bosses, and then take on the Elite 4 - essentially 5 big gym bosses in a row, the 5th being the current champion; To be the man, you have to beat the man...). It's tempting to train all the 'Mon you own but bear in mind that you could easily find yourself grinding 10 levels a piece for 30 'mon quite early in the game. It's drudgery. But the latest games - Black and White - make it easier with the Audino... There's more to it than that - specifically, "Effort Values" which are permanent stat bonuses you build up with every single fight - but they're not a big deal until you start playing competitively.

Anyway, you learn as you go. There's a School in the first town of every game that explains the basics. Any more questions, come to the dark side

There's always that cheat in Pokemon Red!

(I do not promote using rare candy and hundreds of pokemon master balls for fulfilling your enjoyment of Pokemon)

I just whipped out my old copy of Yellow the other day, playing it on the Super Gameboy because my actual gameboy just disappeared somehow! So nostalgic...

I still have red, blue yellow and gold along with my Gameboy color. Have to dust them off some day. Gold and Silver was the turning point for me tho, after that I never bought anything Pokemon related ever again.

Why? Many people claim those to be the best pokemon games?

Nothing has come close yet. There's just something about feeling that you've finished the game and then realising there's a whole other half just inches from where you originally started.

Well, not really. Johto was easier and shorter to get through than R/B/Y and Kanto was dwarfed somewhat compared to its appearance in Red/Blue/Yellow. Kanto also manages to be redundantly easy by the time you reach it in Gen 2. Which was just two shorter quests, instead of the rest of the Gens, where it's a whole. Although, the remakes of Gold and Silver manage to be the closest to a definitive adventure of Pokemon as we're going to get.
