We've a Howard side spreader. I use it with a 65 HP tractor.
I always have the PTO in the 540 gear. I keep the revs fairly well up too.
Sidespreaders take a huge amount of power to drive, so better to work in the low PTO gear.....me thinks anyway.

1000 rpm with the lid up empties the quickest
It wouldn't help the life of the spreader though:)

I always use these in the 540E box. It simply rotates the shaft that bit faster the 540 hence emptying the spreader faster. I usually have upwards of 140hp on it tho and even at that it takes a bit of grunt to get it started. So id stick with the 540. I would even think that trying to start one in the 1000 box with a medium sized tractor could even stall the engine or else keep shearing shear bolts.

we have a KIDD spreader, keep out about 10feet each stroke, start machine in 540 at tickover then full power for 33% of load, then change up a gear for next 33% throttle @80% then up a gear again for fianal 33% throttle at 70%.

keep an eye on what you are doing or you will have the start too bare and the end black as coal

We do this every year with ours. We have it over 20 years now.
We also grease the bearings after powerwashing and turn the rotor a few times by hand to work in the grease. Stops any water rusting the bearings.
