Hi my question is simply this: Is 6GB RAM in a reasonably priced laptop with an i3 processer overkill. Is it worth spending more money on the laptop as it has 6GB RAM? Opinions please.

It all depends on how much extra it costs, and what you're going to be using it for.

Getting 6GB of RAM for internet and watching films is overkill, but if the price difference was small i'd probably go for it.

My desktop machine would never utilise 6GB of RAM unless i was running a lot of Virtual Machines, and even then i'd just allocate a lot of RAM to my VMs just because it was there.

All depends what you're going to be using the laptop for, but I'd say go for as much as you can afford. RAM is a computer staple, you can't really have too much unless you have a 32-bit OS.

I wouldn't go overboard spending more money on ram if you don't need to. If you find you need its easy and relatively cheap to upgrade it.

To give you an idea of the cost look up the type of laptop here and see what price the ram shows up as. If you see a major price difference I wouldn't bother with it.

In most cases upgrading your ram these days involves unscrewing a panel, popping a couple of ram sticks and putting the new ones in. Its a simple clip in type of job. Two minutes on most sensibly designed laptops. Some can be more of a pain where you have to pop the keyboard but thats a little more rare these days I think

CTRL-ALT-DEL and look at how much ram is being used during your most taxing computer useage

If its anything close to full then you will definitely benefit from more.

If you've a gig or more free then extra ram is pointless. Windows will cache stuff into unused ram but realistically you only benefit from the first few hundred MB and then Windows is clutching at straws as to what to cache next.

One time I found the prefetch service loading a movie into its cache, pure stupid. :pac:

Realistically the average person (browsing, email, etc) doesnt need more than 3GB but ram is at an all time low so if you want to put 6GB in for the heck of it then go ahead.

Have 8GB myself. Yes it is overkill majority of time but when I need to run multiple programs at the same time which are ram hungry it is a gem.
