Have been threatening to dump UPC for awhile now.

Set up my dish and installed my FTA receivers awhile ago, purchased a Humax Freesat receiver for main room, and mounted aerial for Saorview.

Got sat system working fine, but was a bit slow to tune in Saorview. So, just to-day, disconnected UPC+ box, connected aerial to tv, Samsung 46LCD with mphg4 on-board, tuned in telly and, hay-presto, all Irish channels working.

    What can I say!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delighted. RTE2 Hd, and all other Irish channels appear to be better than UPC was. E-mailed UPC to cancel TV subscription, (30 days notice required), so next month will be about €480 a year better off, nothing wrong with that. :D

I know,I know, I will miss some of the UPC stations, Discovery, Living etc, but as far as the others go, might as well get crap for free as pay for it, and anyway, I think FTA/Freesat have as good a selection of channels as pay TV, and will get better this year.

Anyway, what have I got to loose. If I want to go back, are they going to say no???????????????????????????

    Try it and see.

    Cheers

    TC

In fact UPC had to get rid of ITV2,3 4 etc so you could have the pleasure of watching more TV3. Going Freesat and Saorview, you get them back for free.

    Great.

No. Saorsat hasn't been released yet, and when it is, it will be from a different satellite and use Ka band rather than the Freesat Ku band. As for whether the TV could pick it up if you pointed a dish the right way and changed the lnb, a Freesat HD TV might, but until the service is actually up and running, nobody can be sure.

Yes, I know that. I was asking if they're compatable with the service and if anyone has tried to receive the the current test transmiissions on one.

It does state that any Freesat HD receiver should be able to receive the service.

Any Mpeg4 HD DVB-S2 receiver should be able to receive it, but as I said, that won't be known for sure until the service is up and running. The current tests shouldn't be taken as proof one way or the other, we'll have to wait until the actual service is up and running. It is very likely that it will work, but only a fool would guarantee it at this stage.

I'm very confused by all this stuff - I'm easily confused of course:). But can I just ask if I got rid of UPC and put up an ariel instead what channels would I be able to receive? I live in Northside city centre Dublin and currently haven't an external ariel. Would I be able to receive the saorview service with an internal ariel or would I definitely have to install an external one. I hate the idea of drilling through ceiling/floors to get service down to ground floor. Of course I have an unused chimney so could I route the cable down the chimney?

No UK stations, only the below.

A cheap indoor aerial may well work if placed beside a window. If a cheap one fails to provide adequate reception, try this:

OR an easily mounted external which negates the need for drilling through ceiling / floors etc.

For optimum reception, an outdoor is always preferable.

Thanks Badgermonkey. How does the 'window pass cable' work? Sounds like a good idea if it means no drilling! Would you still have to bring the cable down the external wall to the window in which the aerial is connected to TV? Or is that a really bad question:)

Getting back to your original question. You can also get a box (eg Ferguson Ariva 120 Combo) that does all the free British stations (ITVs/BBCs/Ch4/E4/Sky News etc) incl HD and the Irish ones (Saorview as listed above) on the one box, in the one channel list for less than €100. The box itself connects to an aerial and a sat dish (€30). NO more bills after that.

Your second question about not drilling into the house. These flat connectors below junction the outside and inside. They bend and stick at the window opening.

    They are about 99c.

With the Ferguson Ariva 120 Combo ? Yes you use your existing dish, just unplug the sat cable from the Sky box and plug it in the back of the Ferguson Box and you will get the BBCs ITVs Ch4s Sky News etc. Its that simple.

You also plug an aerial in the back too for RTE'sTV3 3e etc i.e. Irish Saorview/Digital stations. Then you have all your British and Irish stations in one channel list for free, one remote control. No more bills. You can record with it too (to a USB device) which can be played back on the box or indeed on a pc/laptop as well.

    Have a look here>

You can also share the downlead from the satellite dish with a Saorview aerial using the apropriate splitter/combiner - one at each end.

I have the Ferguson Ariva 120 combo and it's a great box but when I try to listen to any BBC Radio stations it says no signal. Can anyone help?
