Diagnostic fault reset, when does fault re-appear?

So I was wondering, if I went to look at a car that I wanted to buy and the seller had reset, let's just say for example the engine management light, how long, time or mileage would it take for the fault to re-appear, the engine management light.

It depends entirely on the fault. If its a present, permanent fault then it would come back on straight away, If it had an intermittent fault then it could come on in half an hour or a week.

Ok, good to know. So there's not much you can do if you buy a vehicle and the engine light comes on after the transaction!

You have no legal comeback. But if you have access to even a fairly simple code reader you could see if the ecu has any stored or intermittent faults.
