Bloating & stomach cramps after long run...

    Hi,
First poster here, but I'm hoping someone can help put my mind at ease!
I'm training for the half marathon at the minute & have done some sprint tri's and 10k over the summer.

I'm up to 10miles on my long run, & feel well during it, but each time after my long run I get awful stomach cramps.

I can only sip a recovery drink afterwards & can't eat anything for at least 3 hrs afterwards.
I try not to eat anything 2-3 hrs before my run, so that's leaving me a long time not eating anything.

So I'm wondering has anyone experienced this before
Is it more of a passing phase until my body gets used to running for longer?

    Any tips much appreciated.

While I can't say I've had this problem myself may I suggest that you try and eat something a bit closer to your run. Even something small like a banana or a flap jack an hour before you go out might settle your stomach.

I've only been running about a year and am still working out what works and what doesn't when it comes to eating before I run. It may take a bit of experimentation to find out what works.

Do you bring a drink with you? While a drink might not be necessary for a 10 mile run if you are hydrated I find it no harm to hydrate as you go rather than wait till you get home.

    Hope this helps
    Dev

    Thanks Dev,
I borrowed my hubbies drinks belt for the 10mile today & took
50ml of water & lucozade sport at about the 5mi point.

You're right about trying a snack before the run.
Will try eating a banana about half hr beforehand & see if it helps.
    Thanks

I find it very hard to eat a solid meal for at least 2-3 hours after a long run too. I wouldn't say I feel bloated or have stomach cramps but I definitely can't eat much.
I try to get something quick and eay in after a run instead, your body needs simple carbs and some protein, so I generally have something like Chocolate milk and then wait a few hours until I feel like eating.
