Merc E220 CDi - Opinions

I'm seriously looking at trading my current car, Audi A6 1.8T in for one of A Merc E Class 220CDi . They seem to be on the market for fairly reasonable price at the moment and being a 2.2, the tax would not be too bad. I'm looking at a 2004 - 2007 model. I would prefer the 320 CDi but tax rate puts me right off.

I was looking at the Audi Diesels but they are bloody expensive

Main reasons for me considering this trade is in:

Fuel efficiency (Currently spending a fortune on petrol for long journeys)
    Comfort on long journeys
Decent amount of room for 4 adults
    Decent boot space
Lots of nice extras (air con, cruise control etc)

So does anyone on here have one and if so would you recommend one?

If you do own one and wouldn't recommend it, why?

    Tox

    Paddy,

Have driven a rental E220cdi a few years back for nearly two weeks and 4000km. Nice and comfortable - I did't find it terribly economical though because that engine they fitted is just not powerful enough in my opinion.

A 270cdi is a great compromise and not too much more to tax, I've driven the 320cdi and 350 petrols fine cars great engines for cruising but really don't go like a 5 series and people are asking unjustifiable money for them

I work in a mercedes specialist as a mechanic and I wouldn't buy any merc with the 220 engine as they give loads of proplems I.e injectors leaking and inlet manifold trouble.just my 2cents worth but I'm telling you u will be in the garage more offton then not

What years are affected most by the injectors leaking? Was that problem around on the older 99 to 02 W210 model? Or, was it the later models?

The injector problem is also there on the w210 and w202s fitted with the cdi engines, this is however a pretty small problem as most workshops now have access to kit for extraction/seat repair/clamp thread repair.
Wear on the intake flap spindles is something I've only seen on higher mileage vehicles and as modern diesels go its not the end of the world.
They are a bit more expensive in general for parts but I'd say youd be making a fair step up the reliability ladder coming from a turbo petrol audi.

I drive a 2009 E220 Newer Model. I have had no problems at all with the car and I get 900 kms per full tank of fuel.
Great car, may not be as dynamic as the 520d but just felt that there were too many around.
It goes back to the leasing company in January and I will be definitly go with a new one, perhaps the Avant Garde next year......Test drove A6 last week and I still think that Audi are still not quite there yet against Merc and Bmw.....

What does the monthly lease go for on a new E220?

I drive a 2006 "facelift" E220cdi and I have to say I am well pleased with it.

It is extremely comfortable and I think there is plenty of power if required.

Aparently the earlier 2006 and older models had electrical problems, but these are supposed to have been resolved in the newer ones.

I have mine for 18 months now and have had no issues.

The financial controller does all the haggling regarding the best lease deals etc but the car ws sourced at Donohoes Mercedes in Enniscorthy and they have been great as the service contract is also with them.
Id say if you called them they could give you the figures over the phone. Their number is 0539242526
