I'm a big fan of newer OEM (Origional manufacturer) on older cars. Some work, some don't, but I think these Avantgarde Sport wheels make this S -class look a million dollars.

Right wheels improve car looks by million times.

That's true, but I think the OEM wheels do it better than any other.

Mostly i think like it looks like the owner is trying to hard....
They often look out of place...ie. the wheels attract your eye more than the rest of the car so its out of ballance.
It works on some cars better than others.....i dont think it works on bland luxury saloons.

I had a saloon with those in 18's but they ruined it, 17's would of been more than enough.

There's a fine line between tasteful and skangery, I think.

Ultra low profile tyres just make me think that car's prob uncomfortable.

Aye, the 18's on the Merc were just that, ruined the car and actually damaged the wing in the process lol.

16" would have suited it even better, as pajo 1981 says the higher profile won't compromise the comfort of the car.

I think I remember the saga about that car, it took you almost as long to buy it as you owned it iirc. :D Lovely car though.

I usually keep myself to OEM and tend not to go a lot higher on size. If the car manufacturer designed the car with R16 I would try to keep with it or just increase to R17 but no higher. Just some cars are designed somewhat stupidly with a nice body with huge wheelarches and R15 in standard, i.e. Mitsubishi galant. In this case car is literally screaming - get me R17!!! :D

I bought it on complete impulse the second time it came up for sale, and then a friend of mine pestered me to sell it to him! He had it for about a month or two and then bought an s320!

OEM wheels on models older than they were intended for rarely look good IMO.

I changed the wheels on my car from standard Astra 16" to the 17" Astra Turbo wheels. Only an inch in the difference but to me improved its looks massively.

    Indeed.

Rare, OEM period wheels on the other hand look great on the right car (of same era) several years later. Especially when they are a blast from the past. Nostalgia .............

Loads of examples out there. Plenty of mass market motor manufacturers had some cool wheels in the 80's and 90's.

Those alloys in the OP do nothing for me I'm afraid.

Talking about OEM alloys though, I think Alfa were on the money with their Teledials.

The new 159 wheels look absolutely stunning on the 156, I'll try find a pic.

Ah yes, that Phaeton... I still have dreams about it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,309 ✭✭✭VolvoMan

I personally think OEM wheels off newer models usually only belong on cars on Naas Road used car dealer lots.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,025 ✭✭✭✭-Corkie-

The Phaeton is savage. Matt you should weed your driveway and spend less time on Boards..:D

Anyway back on topic, I think the new Passats look great with the Le mans wheels like I have. I have to Laugh at Caddy vans with S8 alloys or worse with Golf GTI alloys..

I was a bigger fan of the Le Mans when they didn't come standard on Hi Lines, same with the Monte Carlo's... ALthought they're more common than the Le Mans now.

Same here. In Miami blue especially. The Peugeot 106 Rallye with the white painted 13'' steel wheels always appealed to me too for some unknown reason

Lowering a car can improve a cars look as much as bigger wheels. Wheel arch space ruins a cars look, especially smaller steel wheels on entry models, such as a 03-06 Mazda 6.

Ive seen those AMG monoblocks pictured above on Passats and Golfs and have to admit they looked good. People are putting new type Golf Gti alloys on everything VW lately and they dont work, especialy on a Bora. Audi probably do the best alloys but theres too many around now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,593 ✭✭✭tossy

I'm all for OEM+ my own offering of OEM wheels on an old car.

Some don't like these (not too fussed myself) but want to keep it as original as possible.

I've been toying with changing them but must resist.

    Agreed.

Those 205 wheels look good on a Berlingo - better than the cheapo 5 spokes you usually see on them.. same is true for Saxo VTR wheels.

:D brilliant,in its day it made drivers of a lot better cars than that unhappy,i wish this recession would f off so i can start again with another forced induction V6 vag car.

There's a TDI Golf near me, kitted with a R32 kit, and honest to god 911 rims on it.

    These ones to be exact.

And I'm torn. I don't know if they suit it, or if they're bloody stupid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,694 ✭✭✭✭L-M

I've seen a few done very nicely with them, some not so nice.

If done right it can look well, however the are available as reps now and are the preserve of the felt spec brigade,i wouldn't touch them. Here's a bora with genuine ones.

Tis pure 'felt spec, BUT they are the real deal. And again, while 'felt spec, it's done well. Daddy has money, ya see.
