I remember reading somewhere that DCU's logo is designed to look to/represent the future, in place of a coat of arms (which associated with history and the past).

Did I imagine this, or has somebody else read it too?

Pretty sure they're a bit too modern to have a coat of arms.

I remeber the old Coat of Arms, it mentions it on the site you linked. Its similar to the Dublin one with the 3 castles. I can't remeber if it was ever DCU's or NIHED's. I could find it either way....But I did discover that DCU stands for Desert Combat Uniform....who knew

DCU dos not have a coat of arms. We have a corporate logo... those silly yellow lines around the letters DCU.
We did have an old crest which was the 3 castles, but Ferdi did away with that 10 years ago.

I thought it was possible though UL has one and they were established only 3 years prior to DCU.

    Dear John,
Thanks for your message. DCU was established by Act of Government in 1989, after a rigorous international review to evaluate our case to merit university status. Prior to that we were NIHE (National Institute for Higher Education) -- we admitted our first students to NIHE in 1980. So the crest you have from Wikipedia (also available from Google Images) is the correct one -- the original DCU Logo!
    I hope this helps.
    Best wishes
    Brian

Well Prof. MacCraith replied right away - guess the Wikipedia entry is the crest, damn impressed considering the date it was created.

nice one! he didn't wait too long to reply, did he? :)
bit of a shame we never had a proper crest, would make our degree certs look pretty impressive abroad :pac: , but i am fond enough of the current logo, looks better on the hoodies and stuff... can see why they got rid of the previous one, i don't think it suited DCU; too stuffy and formal for such a new uni without old traditions and history. wonder what possessed UL to create one?
