EA's now stopped turn 10 from using Porsches

Bad news for Forza fans, EA have decided not to allow Turn 10 to use Porsche in Forza 4. Instead we will have to make do with RUF.

Now don't get me wrong RUF make some quick cars. But I'll miss some of the Porsches like the 914 (brilliant entry-level car) and the #16 RS Spyder Evo (probably one of the fastest cars in the game)

    Link

"This kills me," says Greenawalt in the piece. "While Forza Motorsport 4 will feature RUF, it will not include Porsche cars. As many of you know, since the beginning of the Forza franchise, the Porsche license has been available only through a sub-licensing deal with EA. In Forza 3, we were able to feature more than 35 different Porsche models by offering to collaborate with EA. For Forza 4, we were looking forward to adding even more Porsche cars, and we were especially looking forward to featuring multiple Porsche experiences in our new Autovista mode. In the end, however, EA couldn't see their way towards collaborating again."

Sure this happened with Gran Turismo with Ferrari I think. Ferrari had a seperate license with another company so they couldn't put Ferrari's in their game.

you make this seem like it was a last minute decision from EA or something?

they signed a deal with porsche for exclusive use, if anything it's porsche who stopped turn 10 from using porsches in the game

EA may have signed a contract with Porsche, but it was EA's decision to prevent them from using the cars. I don't think there's actually anything Porsche can do about it!
Was there any reason given as to why they refused Turn 10 permission to use the cars?

porsche were the ones who agreed to an exclusivity deal

you don't pay for an exclusivity deal and then let other people use the thing you have exclusive rights to

porsche could well have insisted on no exclusivity

If you've signed an exclusivity deal with a company then you cannot just break that contract because you want to :) Incredibly short sighted of Porsche, but EA are trying to take the Need For Speed franchise overall and turn it into a brand you associate with driving games of all description (in the way that we all know EA Sports means "officially licensed sports games" like FIFA or NFL etc)

The last Shift game, they're pushing hard to be a viable competitor for Grand Turismo and Forza's spots and like it or not, exclusivity on hugely popular manufacturers like Porsche are one of the ways of going about that.

EA have been licencing Porsche to Forza up to now. But have pulled the plug on them using it in Forza 4. Which sucks for racing fans especially since we've had Porsche cars in the last three Forza's.
"While we respect EA's need to run their business as they see fit, we've regularly collaborated in the past and hope we can find our way back to that approach," continues Greenawalt. "Forza had the exclusive license for all Ferrari cars, for example, on the Xbox and PC platforms. But at the end of the day, we've always found that we just weren't willing to block other racing games from having Ferraris outright, as we believed that this would do nothing but hurt the racing ecosystem."

    lots and lots of money?

    lots and lots of money?
Obviously its money, but what are we talking about here mord?
Whats lots and lots of money, would it be in the tens of millions or just a few hundred thousand. I can't imagine that Porsche would exclusively license their hardware for just the price of 3 or 4 units, it would seem like selling out.

I'd say we're in the million rather than the thousand territory for a deal like this, payable over a number of years. But Porsche gets a fair bit out of it too - brand awareness and people talking about their product and all that goes with it.

licencing to one publisher would surely limit their exposure, when you have huge names like Forza unable to use the brand?

Bit rich of Turn 10 to complain about EA not letting them use the Porsche licence when MS, who own the Ferrari rights, only let EA have Ferraris for Shift 1 DLC and no other game since.

GT5 has Ferrari rights:confused: MS would hardly give them to a competitor

As the article above said, MS only have them for PC and 360. Test Drive Unlimited 2 had a similar issue recently with the 360 version featuring some Ferrari models but not the 458 Italia which could only be driven in the PS3 and PC versions of the game.

Just put the RUF CTR "Yellowbird" in.

That's the only Porsche/RUF that's ever mattered TBH.
