I was just wondering, I would like a fairly good Gaming and Video editing Build.
I've been looking for a build that would fit the bill.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Btw I'd like to see how cheap it could be done for aswell.

We need a bit more information. What games, what resolution would you be playing at, do you want to play at max settings or is medium ok? What sort of video editing and how heavy is it. Whats your budget? Do you need windows and a monitor as well?

You could possibly chose a cheaper motherboard, cheaper cooler, cheaper PSU, a different case and also a cheaper graphics card.
Though if you're using Adobe Premiere Pro, the GTX570 is the cheapest GPU (unless you find a GTX470) which is supported by Adobe to run the Premiere Pro's mercury engine's GPU acceleration, which is why I chose the GTX570.

There is a hack for making Adobe recognise other Nvidia gpus too like the gtx560ti or the gtx480, so you could go with that too but then there's always a chance it might not work if Adobe releases an update and such.

That is if you use or plan to use Premiere Pro...

Also SSDs do very little to improve video editing performance so don't waste your money on them. Instead what drastically improves video editing performance is having multiple hard drives. Here's a table of recomended storage configurations for video editing in Adobe (should work with other softwares in principle too):

Games would be Eve online and Guild war and its sequel. One screen nothing very fancy. Videos would be Hd 1080 or 720 never longer then 30 mins.

Btw are you like waiting for someone to ask for a build because your name popped up alot :P in the builds i was looking at haha

As I said try cheap as possible. I'd like to see a 500 build but not very pushed as long as its under 700.

Most video editing softwares make heavy use of hyperthreading so going with an i7 will drastically improve your rendering performance. But if you're tight on budget then i5 should probably do.

If you want a super stable PC (which most video editing users demand) then don't bother overclocking it and you can save more money by going with a H67 mother board.

What you need for video editing is a lot of ram though. Especially for large 1080p HD files. 8GB is considered minimum for smooth workflow. 16GB recommended.

You've got a H61 board and a 2500k CPU, you need a P67 board to overclock. Also a 500GB hard drive might be cutting it a bit tight if theres going to be video editing.

Oh yes forgot if you aren't overclocking no bother getting the i5 2500k, 2400 will do...

Also I would throw in a cpu cooler. Video rendering will really heat up the cpu and you'll have 80c core temperatures under the stock intel heatsink which are not very good.

For the HDD, I'ld say get two 500gb ones rather than one big 1000gb. One drive will really be the bottle neck slow down the video editing workflow. So OP can first start off with a single 500GB HDD and then soon can always add another one or two more 500GB HDDs. That will give a much more efficient workflow.

I was wondering, Is there any general disadvantage to doing your own build? I was just wondering in terms of computer programmes not Identifying parts of the build and then deeming the computer below minimum spec?

Or is it just taken that once done correctly it shouldn't matter? Sorry I am probably over thinking things but this will be my first build.

I'ld say the only disadvantage is if you screw it up, you'll have to RMA the part and stuff. But as you won't be overclocking, there's isn't much way you'll screw it up so you should be fine. Just read through the instruction booklets, watch some how to videos on youtube and its pretty simple.

When you build it yourself, atleast you know what's in your computer and you can chose good quality parts. Most OEM desktops will cheap out on essential parts like the PSU or ram or cpu cooler and this is why your OEM desktop will become slow and inefficient in a few years time.

No need for the cooler, the stock one will be fine for the i5-2400. The intel sandy bridge stock cooler is actually quite decent.

As for the hard drives, I don't quite understand what you are trying to say? Are you talking about using RAID0 to speed up performance? Either way having a single 1TB drive will be better as space is more important than speed.

Nope, like have one separate disk for OS + Programmes, another for the media files and another for the exports. So that way you have separate disks for the different tasks. The software isn't trying to read off and write onto the same disk at the same time. It has different disks for different tasks so it can read off one hard disk at write onto another one improving efficiency...

Hey guys just wanted to ask if this setup would be good to go?, I'm looking for only a gaming build now, and general use. Was given the video pc by work so that is all good . The Game i'm looking to play is skyrim and eve online if your looking for minimum spec but would like to get better then minimum
