A Co Offaly couple have paid tribute to a garda who answered a distress call and delivered their baby in the living room of their house yesterday.

A Co Offaly couple have paid tribute to a 34-year-old garda who answered a distress call and delivered their eight pound baby in the living room of their house in the town of Daingean.

Yesterday, mother-of-three Niamh Longworth called an ambulance when she discovered she was about to give birth at the family home in Philips Vale in Daingean.

However she later raised the alarm with family members and the gardaí when she realised she might not have time to get to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise where the baby was due to be born.

Garda Nicola Gleeson, who is stationed at Tullamore Garda Station, was on duty in Daingean at the time and responded to the call.

She went to 30 Philips Vale where she helped Mrs Longworth and her husband Damian in the delivery of their new baby Mia.

This afternoon, Niamh and Damian Longworth said they were eternally indebted to Garda Gleeson for the cool and calm way in which she reacted to their call for help and then assisted in the birth of their baby.

Garda Gleeson, who is originally from Borrisokane, Co Tipperary, said she was delighted to be of assistance and everything had gone well.
The ambulance that had been called arrived from Portlaoise hospital five minutes after the birth.

Niamh Longworth and baby Mia are both well.
The couple's two other children - six-year-old Aaron and 14-month-old Finn - joined in the celebrations with their parents and new sister at the family home in Daingean this afternoon.

Congratulations to both the member and the family!

Is there any First Aid training in Garda College? and if so to what level? (CFR, OFA, EFR....?)

    This too shall pass.

Since I dont know what can be said regarding training Il say what can be easily found!

The Occupational First Aid Assessment Authority has a public register of Instructors. This shows a large number of OFA instructors registered at the Garda College, Templemore.

The Garda in the above story said during her interview, when asked, that while they dont learn emergency childbirth in training, they learn "first aid".

The Garda College is not shown as being a PHECC recognised training site for EFR so its safe to assume its not *routinely* thought there.

Childbirth is probably the 2nd or 3rd most natural thing that happens to most human beings since year .

Having said that I salute the Garda that attended this incident as this is not a situation most of us as ordinary human beings find ourselves involved in.
I hope you are a member of this Boards Society as I confer on you the honour I gave to our Canadian friend salute.gif?t=1241912914

By doing this I hope to show how we as EMS providers (at all levels Professional, Voluntary etc) can make a difference in society.

Keep on making the difference friends we are the front line.
