I have just completed pre med and wouldn't recommend getting any books. The only subjects you would even think about getting books for are of course biology, chemistry and physics but the lecture notes are more than sufficient to get you through the year with ease, even if you are new to the subject(s). Basically all that's expected is the material covered in the notes, most of which will be put online throughout the year.

Books are expensive and unnecessary for this year.

I just finished 1st year of Biomed, and I was in all the same classes as pre med bar anatomy. For Physics, Chemistry, and Biology I really wouldn't reccomend getting any books at all, they cost the guts of €40 each and you'll open them about twice. Take good notes in lectures and you'll be fine.

Thank you so much for your helpful replies!:)

However, I would like to have the books too for additional reference. What books were recommended to you?

    Thank you!:)

    Well if you insist...

Biology - Campbell and Reece (anywhere as far back as something like the 4th/5th edition I think?)
Chemistry - The lecturer asks you to stick to his notes, but recommends just a leaving cert level book if you've never done it before
Physics - Introduction to Physics, Cutnell & Johnson. NB - You can access this book in its entirety online once you register for your online assignments.

Beofre you go buying though - Have you received a letter giving you a choice between pre med and 1st med? Only the minority in my year actually had the choice to do it or not...

Please don't waste your money buying these books! You have 6 years of college ahead of you, save the money! If you want to use the books as reference they are all available in the University Library, where you can photocopy important chapters you need for a tiny fraction of the price of the book.

It would work out for the best anyway, college textbooks aren't like secondary school ones where all the content is covered. Lecturers will pick and choose what chapters they will cover, and will leave out loads!
