Eircom - citywest

    Hi

    Can anyone help me am in the process of interviewing to work with eircom in city west, can anyone let me know what it is like to work there eg people, culture etc..much appreciated

    I used to work in eircom, but it was a few years ago - before they were in the financial trouble they're in now.

    eircom is made up of a wide bunch of people - people a couple of years out of school to people working there 40 years. Meteor, who eircom bought a few years ago, are also based in Citywest. A lot of eircom staff transferred over, so even more of a mix.

    Without wishing to offend anyone, a LOT of eircom staff used to have the stereotypical unionised civil service attitude*. Most changes were met with resistance, and I found it a very frustrating place to work at times. You could have the best of ideas, but the bureaucracy made it a slow moving machine. Promotions normally based on length of service rather than merit, some people on automatic increases rather than performance based (pre-1984 staff when it was the department of P&T) etc.

    I think a lot of that has changed though recently; they've gone through a lot of voluntary and involuntary redundancies recently, and there's still lots of uncertainty for the staff. It was probably one of the safest jobs around when I started there, but that's not the case by a long shot anymore.

    What department are you applying to? This can make all the difference.

    *By this I mean the stereotypical attitude that some people think is common - I'm not saying this is the case

    Have to agree with Eoin , I too worked in Eircom and found the contrast between old and new staff striking - older staff had joined as Civil Servants and seemed to have little grasp of commercial reality , alcoholism seemed to be quite a problem with a lot of older staff as well though I dunno why.

    Hi Eoin

    Many thanks for the information the department is Customer Service a desk manager role,this is a new role. As I understand it I will be point of contact for Key Account Business customers in servicing their needs, so will need to work with other departments, I have heard morale is quite low and this can mean that people may not be very co - operative with you.
    Do you know if this is the case in this department as I don't want to go into a job where this is the case, I am not the type of person to job hop, i like to put all I have into a role and have a good working environment and good people to work alongside.

    I worked for them for about 11 years before taking a VL package about a year ago now. I dont think you will find any problems with the people there as a lot of the dead wood has been moved out(and some good people as well!). Over the last five years however the numbers of employees has been cut drastically but changes to processes and systems to cope with this reduction have not been implemented. With the financial trouble that the company is in now there is little chance of there being money available to make these changes. Staff morale would be low due to continued pressure from management to impose wage cuts no bonuses(but this happens everywhere) despite some of the top dogs not being affected by these cuts.

    Best: Nice friendly people that you would be working with

    Worst: For me was distance to travel but not sure if this will affect you. Next would probably have been constant stream of bad news on financial position of the company. There never seemed to be any good news coming from management.

    I should probably have mentioned that there are some really great people in eircom. I made some great friends there who I am still in contact with.

    One big negative is the bashing you get when people hear you work for eircom. There is a lot of hatred for the company - some justified, some based on incorrect information and an unreasonable expectation of service. Plus no idea of what goes on behind the scenes with the likes of comreg, massively complex IT systems etc. It gets you down when you're slow to say who you work for.
