Unless you live near the border or in Wexford with a decent aerial, a standard Freeview TV isn't of much use as that is a UK system with different standards.

What is the aerial lead actually connected to? Is it an external aerial? What do you get on the other TVs?

I understand that freeview is of no use in my area but why am i getting rte one?

I get about 20 channels on the other tvs all irish and discovery, sky one etc..comes through the old chours tv cabled system dont know what the term is for it so i dont think its connected to the external aerial.

What you have is an analog cable TV connection. Probably UPC (formerly Chorus). Do you subscribe to them now? If not, they probably never got around to disconnecting it and you technically should not be using it.

If you do subscribe, you'd be better off with a digital service and box from them - more channels, better quality, less money.

    Post the TV's model no.

    Where are you located?

As was said above your aerial connection is probably a UPC cable connection. It has found the scrambled digital channels which require a STB and subscription to descramble (one or two may not be scrambled e.g. RTÉ1).

Are the analogue channels stored elsewhere? In the 800's or 900's maybe.

If not do an analogue scan on the TV (see the manual if you don't know how), this should find the analogue channels.

For the new Saorview digital terrestrial tv service which carries a number of Irish channel free an aerial is required - http://www.saorview.ie/what-is-saorview/
