what format are you trying to convert to?

There are lots of trial video conversion programs that do this, you shouldn't have to pay anything.

Okay I guess you mean you want to convert a video to youtube flv or whatever, try this

    http://download.cnet.com/Riva-FLV-Encoder/3000-2140_4-10320097.html?spi=9789e38b83f96880bde51edac05276d8

Googled it and it looks like it might help :)

just download realplayer as it has a built in download button for any youtube video plus the free version allows you to convert to avi etc...... http://www.filehippo.com/download_realplayer/

easy and handy to use. works in internet explorer & firefox.

    http://keepvid.com/

Simple, just throw the URL in there and you can download it, It downloads as a .flv file which VLC can play

Because its an Ipod you will need to convert it to Apples own format, I think handbrake can do it, but I don't really know,

It probably encoded it as a apple mov file so, or whatever format they use nowadays, trust me on this, like Apple are with not allowing flash content be played on their devices you can guarantee they won't play flvs (Flash video ;) ). Some youtube videos are mp4s, these may work on Apple devices, but from past expierience I would seriously doubt it, when I had an ipod a while back it took me ages to try encoding videos so they would play on it :rolleyes:

If its a friends party, could you now just get the original footage from whatever camcorder / phone it was recorded on?

You can use jDownloader to download any video from youtube. Just install the program, and start it up. Then go to the video on youtube and copy it's link and jDownloader will find the files for you.

I would imagine you can use itunes to covert the video from what ever format it downloads in to the proper iPod format. Once you have the video downloaded open itunes. Then from windows explorer drag the file and drop it into itunes. If itunes can handle video conversion you should see at the top in the ifno screen the progress of the coversion. It does it for audio so my guess is it works with video too. Otherwise just use and converter, like the one yoyo mentioned to convert the file. .mp4 files should work on iPods if memory serves me right.
