Condemned UTA locos

    I think I recall reading that several locos from UTA were sold as scrap to Portugal or Spain and exported intact. ANyone got any more info on that or photos?

    No idea about UTA locos but I read somewhere (it might have been Steaming in Three Centuries, I'll have to check) that some CIÉ J15 class locos were sold to Spain for scrap, whether or not they were intact I'm not sure. The rails from the Waterford & Tramore line were also sold for scrap to one of these countries.

    The rails and entire set were sold to Nigeria and the sleepers given to local farmers. The allignment was subsequently sold off to ensure that the W&T line which was economically feasable would never be reinstated. It was an deliberate act of sabotage by Todd Andrews and CIE Management at the time. Some of the rails which were dumped on the opposite side of the river are still visible on the walkway near Ballindud on the Waterford to Tramore road.

    Such a pity that a fantastic piece of infrastructure was scrapped by a raving lunatic and incompetent management.

    Some ex-CIE locos did end up in Spain, for scrap to feed blast furnaces. There's a small list of what went out in the Irish Railways section in the Brian Haresnape book on Maunsell locomotives. Can rummage it out this weekend if you like.

    Reportedly, the West Clare and West Cork Railways rails were shipped to Nigeria post closure.

    And the almost new diesel railcars from the West Clare were sold to Bord na Mona for almost nothing - some years back I saw the actual financial records relating to the sale at BnM Oweninny in north Mayo. While they remained in State ownership it was a small purchase by BnM and a huge write down on CIE's books. Incidentally, the three F-class diesels from the West Clare languished at Inchicore Works until 1968 when they were scrapped despite efforts to purchase them by the Isle of Man government. I'm sure their scrap value was enormous. :rolleyes:

    I heard at one stage that the rails from the North Kerry ended up in Sudan. Not sure where I heard it or how true it is.
