Summons/court query

I was recently summonsed for no TV licence. I've searched on the topic and found plenty of threads/posts on the subject but none that actually answer my question.

I understand if I buy a licence now chances are the case will be struck out. However, I have been unemployed for a long time now and just can't afford it (the reason I don't have the licence in the first place). In fact, if I did have the money, I would be renewing my long lapsed house insurance policy instead.

When I go to court and I explain I don't have a licence as I am unemployed, what can I expect? Will I just be fined on the spot? And, considering I can't afford a licence, how am I expected to pay a fine? Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you can't afford the license, you shouldn't have a TV. Throwing out the TV might reduce your household insurance too...Not meaning to insult you but I think it's an absolute copout to claim that you cannot afford to pay the TV license. Regardless of your personal circumstances, if you own a TV, you have to have a license. If you cannot afford a TV license, then you should not have a TV. Just as you should not buy a car, if you cannot afford insurance, road tax, etc.

If you go to court for not having a license and tell the court that you don't have a license, you are pleasding guilty so you can expect a fine. If you cannot pay, a bench warrant could issue over the nonpayment and you could be arrested and spend time in jail.

The whole tv license is a bloody joke!
