Paint won't stay on gable wall

I have had the exterior of my house painted twice in the past 2 years. After a short while and after rain, the paint bubbles on the gable wall and eventually begins to peel off.
Most recently I watched the painters scrape off all loose paint, apply a bonding coat and then apply 2 coats of weatherglaze paint. I can't see that they did anything wrong, yet the paint has started bubbling again after a few days.
They did mention that there could be moisture in the wall which is causing the bubbling. The house is early 80's and there is no sign of any dampness inside.

Anyone know how, or who would be able to test the walls for moisture?

Yeah sounds like damp or moisture. A moisture reader may help, although these are usually for wood. Don't waste any more money painting until you have it sorted, although you probably know this by now.

Could be something as simple as flashing not doing its job, or a slipped tile, blocked gutters etc.

Has it peeled in big sections or is only in certain areas?

Cardwizzard, it's not every area of the wall but only in certain sections. The areas affected are of various sizes - some a couple of inches square and the odd section might be six inches square.

I certainly won't be spending more on painting until a cause is found and resolved. Would a building surveyor be able to check the wall ?

Tape a square of clear polythene to the wall on all 4 sides. If the wall is damp moisture droplets will form on the surface of the plastic in a few hours. Duct tape might be sticky enough to hang the plastic.

Get the areas that are peeling re-skimmed

Could do, but probably better off, if he finds the source of the problem to stop recurrence of the problem again.

Thanks for suggestions - I'll try the polythene test just to confirm if moisture is the problem.
